McIntosh MR78 Fully serviced & 6-mos warranty from master tech, Herb Ward. Get ready for hi-fi fun!

Here’s a clean McIntosh MR-78 tuner, just serviced by master
tech, Herb Ward, who will include a 6-month warranty on the work her performed
on this component. (Should you require service during the six-month service,
you are responsible for shipping to and from Mr. Ward’s shop in Norwalk, CT.)

Here’s what was done during the service (in quotation
marks):

“The PCB mounted capacitors for the -12 volt and the +24
volt power supplys were replaced.

The chassis mounted twistlock capacitor was checked and found
to be ok at this time.

Some but not all of the tantalum capacitors on the MPX
decoder PCB were replaced.

There are several power supply bypass tantalums on the MPX
decoder PCB which are reliably know to fail... I replaced all of these devices.

There are also two tantalums in the audio signal path which
were replaced with film or quality electrolytics ( Elna Silmic II )

I replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors on the MPX
line amp circuit board. Many of these are the older plastic case devices, which
are known to fail as they age. Again Elna Silmic II were used at these
locations.

I gave the tuner an alignment inspection and found the MPX
decoder to need alignment as did the detector.

The RF an IF stages were found to be in proper alignment.

I cleaned the switches and controls with Caig Deoxit.

Many of the internal trim pots for the detector and the MPX
decoder were also cleaned.

A six month warranty on the work as described above is
included.”

I’m rating this a 6/10 on the Audigon scale due to a delaminated-paint
area on the upper right side of the front faceplate (see photos) and due to
some minor nicks and typical rust around the fuse holder in the rear. (I tend
to underrate components when I grade them.)

Ask any and all questions. Nothing to hide here—just good
clean hi-fi fun.

I will ship this in a double heavy duty box. Experience has
taught me that’s it’s a good idea to remove the front knobs before shipping
glass-front McIntosh components. All you have to do is push them back one. No
biggie.
