The Carver TX-11b is a terrific tuner and is highly regarded by the “Tuner Information Center” the review is below. This particular TX-11b is probably the most famous one ever made, it is the exact unit that is featured on a web site: I was shopping for a tuner that could pull in stations in the valley where I live and read the comments about the Carver. I found a post on the web about a retired ham electrical engineer that had modified his. I sent him an email asking if he would do one for me, he said no… but you can buy the one on the post. So I did! This thing is amazing, it is the best tuner I have owned as far as pulling in stations, it beats the modified Kenwood’s, Sansui’s (three of them) McIntosh, Yamaha, and Mitsubishi that I have owned. It also is a very musical tuner. Please read the post on the link provided above. In addition to all of those mods I damped the chassis and upgraded the power cable to cryo treated 14 AWG. This item is one of the first to use a new feature available on our cryo-parts web site... "Name your own price" just enter the price you are willing to pay and the feature may accept your offer without human approval- right there on the spot! This is a quote from the Tuner Information Center (this was on an unmodified Carver) Carver TX-11b (1989, $800, photo, owner’s manual part 1, owner’s manual part 2) search eBay This successor to the TX-11a also featured AM stereo capability and supposedly even more sonic improvement, although we’ve never done a shootout between the two. See our contributor Noel’s comment in the TX-11a review above. Here’s our panelist Ray’s report: “The TX-11b has been great fun to play with. Now, having spent some quality time with it, I cannot understand why the FMtuners group hasn’t heard all that much about this thing – it’s really sweet. Could it topple the FT-5500 MKII from the peak position in RFM’s heart? Well, they sound about the same (and that’s compared to the modded Hitachi), the Carver DXes a bit better and quiets a lot better, but the Hitachi does have that precious dBuV signal strength meter, so, left alone on that ol’ desert island with only one tuner I’d have to choose… the TX-11b. Man that hurt! A brief report: FM circuit highlights: RF lineup: Single tuned – dual gate amp – quadruple tuned – mixer. (Yup, 6-ganger.) IF lineup: Wide: 250 kHz ceramic filter – amp – LC – amp – LC – 250 kHz CF – amp – detector. Narrow (before Wide): 180 kHz CF – amp – LC – 180 kHz CF. LA1235 detector IC. LA3401 MPX IC. LC4966 output buffer IC. The MPX has switchable 50 µS/75 µS feedback de-emphasis. AM circuit highlights: RF lineup: Switchable 0 – 12 dB RF gain amp – double tuned – amp – mixer. (Yup, 3-ganger.) IF lineup: Wide: amp – LC – amp – detector. Narrow (before Wide): amp – LC – 450 kHz CF. The FM noise and multipath reduction all appears to be done in the audio circuit realm as is the Schotz noise reduction, but it seems FAR more effective. AM performance and sound are also pretty special but in Wide mode it lets in adjacent stations. Two complaints: At its price Carver should have added a digital signal-strength meter, and the gray letters and numbers on the black dashboard are very difficult to read. Come on Carver, white, hunh? Still, ol’ RFM really likes this Carver creation and it has found a spot both in his rack and in his heart.” To follow the links please visit our web site Cryo-Parts Cryo-Parts Q & A Q- Why are your prices lower on your web site?
