We’re Stereo Exchange, located in New York City. We've been in business since the 1970s and are a major high-end dealer. We have all the current top brands on display in our huge showroom.

Counterpoint amplifiers and preamplifiers are legendary for great sound AND great build quality. This model in particular, has a great reputation with a cult following, especially among vinyl lovers.

It has very low noise, great quality controls, four line-level inputs, and a superior MC/MM phono section.

The gain of the phono stage is adjustable inside with small jumpers. There are also two trimmer controls to fine tune phono channel balance…a great and very unusual feature.

The phono section of the SA1000 is what it’s famous for, and is hard to match even today, this side of $4000.00.

This preamp is in GREAT shape.

The controls and the blue circuit board inside were dirty, but underneath the dirt the preamp was in superior shape. It HAD mismatched phono tubes of unknown hours of use.

I cleaned the faceplate, control knobs, controls, and replaced the tubes with what I BELIEVE are UNused tubes we had. The two 12AX7 tubes we had are branded RAM and were “special low noise” tubes. They are for the phono section. I also replaced the high-level tube.

The preamp now performs beautifully, and has very low noise, so all should be well.

I tested all the inputs and outputs and can’t find a single fault to report.

The three tubes have been removed from their sockets and put into bubble wrap inside the chassis so they will be safe.
