These amps offer much of the performance of the current 1000 series but at real world price. I have owned all the classic series of Boulder amplifiers: 102AE, 250AEs, and the 500AE. To my ears a pair of 250AE monos offer the best listening experience as they offer the famous Boulder transparency with enough power to drive even electrostatics. These are perfectly functional but have a few minor cosmetic blemishes - see photos for small scuffs and scratches. Detailed photos upon request.
Consecutive serial numbers A181 and A182 with upgraded mono binding posts, XLR and mono RCA inputs
This pair has fixed 110 V operation. The Boulder factory doesn’t have any more dual voltage transformers so it is not possible to convert them to 220 V. A step down transformer is needed for use in a 220 V country.
Both amps have been updated, recapped, and checked out by the factory within the last 2 years. The cost of factory updating is now $1000 per pair. You can tell whether 250AEs have been recapped by looking at interior photos. The original / end of life factory caps on the main board and output boards are maroon/burgundy in color compared with new ones that are black with white lettering (as shown in the first photo). Recapping will improve the sonics (tighter bass, better resolution, clearer mids/highs) and make the amps reliable for another 15 - 20 years.
Selectable between stereo and mono via back panel switch so these could be used as two stereo amps if desired. When powering down, sometimes a popping noise will be transmitted through the speakers. This is common for the AE series of Boulder amplifiers and not indicative of an issue.
Boulder amplifiers have sophisticated built in protection against too much DC on the input signal, output shorting and clipping. The amplifier is designed to shut down before destroying your speakers and may save you lots of money and grief down the road. Both pairs have the same factory specifications, which are shown at the end of this listing.
Will ship in new Boulder boxes with one owners manual. Shipping dimensions and weight are for a single amplifier. If you choose PayPal, kindly add 3.0% to cover the fees.
