For sale for original owner –
excellent condition McIntosh MX-132.  Included
are the original Owner’s Manual, new McIntosh factory box, remote and power cord.  Rated as an ‘8’ because I’d rather underrate
it than overrate the unit.

I am not the owner, I’m a
friend of the owner listing it for her because she doesn’t know how to do this.  I’m also not making a cent on this sale – it all
goes to “Jane”.

The background on this
processor is that it was originally installed in a multi-million dollar,
smoke-free, pet-free, child-free beach house with a dedicated home theater that
was completed in the mid-90’s.  “Jane”
has the house listed with a realtor because it’s too big for just her, so if
you happen to have a couple spare million dollars and are interested in a beach
house with absolutely amazing views of Long Island Sound, let me know and I’ll
put you in touch with her realtor.
Anyway, several years ago, hubby decided to replace the old projection
TV with a LED panel and replaced the MX-132 with a MX-120 because the MX-132 couldn’t
handle the HDMI video switching.  Unfortunately,
hubby died a year later and this past summer I agreed to help the widow (“Jane”)
sell the MX-132.  The original box, power
cord and remote had been discarded.  Why had
they been tossed?  The installers programmed
a universal remote and didn’t need the original anymore.  Box/power cord?  Beats me – but none of the boxes from the
original installation had been saved, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised
although I never toss any of that stuff.
I’m guessing that the power cord that came with the MX-120 looked like
an extra because the MX-132’s power cord was already in place in the rack so
the installers took it away with them.   I told “Jane” that if she wanted to sell this
MX-132, she needed to plan on shipping it which meant a factory box, it needed
a power cord and you can’t sell a processor without a remote.  That’s like trying to sell a car without a
steering wheel.  “Jane” agreed to buy all
of those from McIntosh parts.  In the
picture that shows the Owners Manual and remote, you can see what looks like
some plastic sticking up on the remote.
That’s the factory protective plastic covering that you get to peel off
of this new, correct, remote.  BTW,
McIntosh doesn’t ship batteries with the remote.  I installed 2 new Duracell batteries to check
the remote.  You can have the batteries.

To the unit.  It’s in great shape.  I took the best pictures I could.  Because this is being listed on Audiogon
under my name instead of “Jane”’s, I decided to test the unit even though I
know it was fully functional when “Dick” pulled it out of his system.  You can see a picture of what I bothered to
setup to test with – I grabbed a source, unused amp and speakers.  I used a DVD/CD player as input and pulled up
my old B&K stereo amp with a pair of even older Micron speakers.  I checked every 2-channel input and they all
work.  I didn’t test the optical/digital
inputs because that would have meant ripping that cable out of my home theater
system and that’s a PITA.  The tuner
works.  I used a small piece of solid
core wire as an antenna (that’s the red wire hanging over the speaker in back
of the processor) and the thing pulled in a 9 out of 10 for signal strength on
a local channel.  9 out of 10 with a
stupid piece of wire as an antenna?
McIntosh has always produced great tuners (although the purists will
argue that the old ones were better) – but that’s pretty good to me.  That’s all I tested.  As noted earlier, I wasn’t going to rip the
optical cable out of my system to test the optical inputs, but I’ve got to
believe they work.  I also didn’t test
the video because (in today’s world) without HDMI that’s like testing a 1990’s
Cadillac for gas mileage.  Let’s face it –
if you buy this processor, you’re buying it for the looks and sonic
quality.  FYI, my system is based on an
MX-135 which also doesn’t have HDMI video switching, so I just run HDMI cables
from the DVR and DVD player straight to the LED panel.

Cosmetically, the unit’s in
nice shape.  It was installed in a custom
rack system with all of its McIntosh brethren and lived there until it was
replaced by a newer model.  You can see a
picture of the installation.  This is
definitely a unit that was taken care of.

The bottom line on this unit
is that if you’re willing to run your video connections from your DVR or DVD
straight to your display, you can have the famous McIntosh look and sound for a
small fraction of the price that this processor cost new.

If you want to pay via
Paypal, you pay the fee.  Shipping is via
UPS (unless you have a better deal) and will include insurance on the full
value paid for it.  If you want to pick
it up – that’s fine with me.

The unit will be packaged in
the “new from McIntosh” box.  FYI, that
packaging on its own weighs almost 18 pounds.
I was on the phone with McIntosh to ask them about packaging it and they
said to only use the styrofoam peanuts if I want to break the glass.  That’s the whole reason for the double box.

In closing, whoever buys
this unit will have a great looking piece of equipment from a legendary
American brand that should serve you well for years to come.
