Of the 14-tube total, eleven 6922 twin triodes are used in a unique single-ended signal path. High voltage rectification utilizes a 5AR4/GZ34, while regulation is accomplished using a 6550C controlled by another 6922. The beauty of this unit is that gain and power supply regulation is fully vacuum tube generated, not solid state FET like all of ARC's newest offerings such as the PH8 and Reference Phono 2 (and the SE). There is greater depth and openness to vacuum tube designs and much better bloom around images. The soundstage is immense. Gain is switchable for MM and high output MC's (low gain setting) and up to 69db that will handle the lowest output MC's (high gain setting). The Ref Phono is a reference class product in every respect and has the reviews to prove just how good it is. Many reviewers still use it as their reference. Mine has no more than 300 hours use since new and even the ARC dampening rings have not discoloured yet. You will not find a better unit unless you buy new. The REF Phono is dead quiet, you won't hear any hiss but only the blackest background imaginable. Many feel this is the best phono preamplifier ever produced.
