In differing degrees the five men who made this album all came directly under the spell of the persuasive,pervasive musical message delivered by late Carlie Parker. For unlike many Bird-worshippers of their generation, these musicians did get to play with their idol. Sonny Rollins once recorded with Parker and you can dig the results on Miles Davis/Collector’s Items (PR 7044) Sonny Rollins was the nominal leader for this date though actually the combo is the Max Roach Quintet of the day. Max had reformed his group following the tragic deaths of co-leader Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell in an auto accident three months previously. I think this album was produced in Feb.1968.
