Xhadow Connectors - Partial Review 6 moons

The Xhadow's main barrel and rear nut are lathed from pure aluminum rod stock and then anodized in a grey that looks like titanium, said to be both durable and non-conductive. Into the barrel is fitted the contact pin machined from oxygen-free copper (OFC) and then silver-plated and encased in a machined Teflon dielectric. The return leg contact too is machined from OFC and silver plated but uses a more conventional design than the single point Eichmann. The contact pin is fitted with a set screw so you can secure your wire with the set screw, solder it or both. I decided to use just the set screw in hopes that eliminating an extra solder joint might be advantageous to the sonics.

There's no question that with their machined-from-stock exotic materials, the Xhadow RCAs are more finely crafted than the Eichmanns. The real question was, could the Xhadows eclipse the Eichmanns ultra low-mass performance? The Eichmanns by necessity have to be soldered so that's bound to degrade their performance a little. Which then would come closer to no connector at all, the snazzy pedigreed and solderless Xhadows or the soldered low-mass and lightly built Eichmanns?

The Xhadow RCAs are robust and finely crafted, easily the best of this trio. Sonically the Xhadows are the equal of the 47 Labs in transparency, spaciousness, detail recovery and dynamics - and that's no mean feat. Like the 47 Labs RCAs, the Xhadows are extended at the frequency extremes, image even better and have excellent soundstage width and depth.

Daggo Review - February 2012

The WyWires arrived and I first installed them into the Brodmann/Mystere system. Alex pre-burns the cables for 50-hours so they are good to go right out of the box. Quickly I realized, that the WyWires in the Brodmann/Mystere system allowed instruments and vocals to be more independent of each other and all had better articulation. 3 dimensional imaging was better now that sounds could be more easily pinpointed. To tell you the truth, the WyWires helped the Brodmann FS speakers go from overpriced Euro speakers to something I no longer wanted to part with. I finally knew why Constantine had high praise for Brodmann speakers. Compared to the Supra Sword cables, in the same system, the WyWires provided much better bass and the sound held together as the volume was turned up.

In the Melody/Zu system the WyWires interconnects helped tamp down a bit of the aggressiveness coming from the super tweeter, but just slightly. They also increased the individual instruments and vocal articulation. The overall affect of the WyWires was to bring a more natural and effortless sound, rather than help rectify issues.

Alex Sventitsky, the man behind WyWires, designs his cable to help bring forth the natural sound of music in your system. Alex has spent years in the audio world, both as a listener to live and high-end system, and as a music enthusiast. Alex builds just about any kind of analog or digital audio cable you might need, including power cables. (Not covered in this review.) All the cables are built around the same principles, copper strands that are individually insulated with a special enamel, wrapped in cotton sleeves and twisted into a Litz geometrical pattern with PTFE Teflon tubes to protect and separate the conductor assemblies. Since cotton is mostly air, air is the primary dielectric. All cables are hermetically sealed to prevent corrosion to the copper and contamination of the cotton. All cables use Xhadow connectors, which are more conductive than the typical gold connector.

Our interconnects provide excellent electrical performance in all parameters.

The geometry of our interconnect cables enables an extremely low noise floor resulting in exceptional clarity, dynamic range, detail and ambient retrieval, as well as presence and soundstage that accurately captures the original venue and event. Like our other cables, the analog interconnects exhibit very high bandwidth, stable resistance and great frequency extension while at the same time preserving an organic and accurate tonal palette.

WyWires Technology
At WyWires, we believe that a one size fits all approach to cable design does not serve the music or the music lover. WyWires is one of a small handful of companies that makes its cables in-house from scratch. Each of our products is designed for a very specific application. Our design approach has been to question and critically evaluate the tried and true methods of cable design. The result is something unique. Not only do WyWires exhibit excellent measured performance, but they sound great too.

Different source components - phono cartridges, CD players, tuners, phono stages and preamplifiers - output different signal strengths. A low output moving coil phono cartridge may have a nominal output of .2 millivolts or less, while a moving magnet cartridge may output 4 millivolts or more. A CD player’s maximum output is between 2 and 3 volts; up to 15,000 times greater than that of a typical MC cartridge. Our design philosophy dictates that a cable carrying a .2 millivolt output from an MC cartridge must be fundamentally different from a cable that connects your CD player to your preamplifier or for that matter, your preamplifier to your power amplifier.

How we make our cables…
The conductors that we use in our cables are made of many individually insulated strands of ultra high purity copper that are combined and braided according to a proprietary formula that considers voltage output as a primary variable. Our cables have the correct number of strands of a specific gauge for the signal and the return conductor depending on the application. The dielectric material we use is mostly air since the conductors are enveloped in organic cotton and in a larger Teflon tube. Our cables have very low characteristic impedance with very low inductance and capacitance. Minimizing inductance has been proven to be one of the keys in enabling a cable to present inner detail and superior soundstaging.

We believe that capacitance is much less of a problem in cable performance than previously thought. That being said, our cables have the lowest capacitance of any cable we have measured. Our Pre-Out cable has a capacitance of only 5.9 Pico Farads per foot, measured at 10kHz. Since we use small gauge conductors, the phenomenon known as “skin effect” is non-existent in our cables. Our cables have a minimalist look by design. We have demonstrated that adding insulation to obtain girth tends to degrade a cable’s performance. On average, each WyWires cable requires at least 4 person-hours to assemble and test.

Shielding is to be avoided…
In reality, radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are rarely problems in modern music and video systems. The downside of shielding against these imaginary gremlins is that energy is released into the conductive shield and then released back at a later time, smearing the signal. For this reason, our cables have no shield of any kind. The unique geometry of our cables virtually eliminates any tendency for them to act as antennae or to pick up noise from other components. You will find that our cables are state of the art in their ability to present an eerily silent background between the notes on a recording.

What’s with all that weird metallurgy?
Some cable manufacturers differentiate themselves by claiming the unique sonic benefits of silver conductors, exotic alloys as well as long crystal copper conductors and other mysterious metallurgical potions. WyWires uses none of these in its designs and here are the reasons why:

• Pure silver is an excellent conductor of electricity but only slightly better than copper. In practice, silver should be alloyed with some other metal such as palladium, argentium, platinum or copper in order to enable silver wire to withstand physical stress. 99.999% pure silver is simply too soft and fragile for use in audio cables where the consumer expects performance to be stable for many years of handling and possibly several owners. Cables utilizing pure silver will not last long if you frequently move or upgrade your equipment. Our cables exhibit superior electrical properties to any silver cable and will last a lifetime.

• Exotic alloys and amalgams such as copper/aluminum, silver/gold, graphite and the like may be appropriate in some applications such as microwave transmission, transformer windings and dental implants. But again, these combinations do nothing but degrade the electrical performance of a cable at audio frequencies. These exotic materials appear compelling on the surface - we believe that the use of these materials may create a false sense of product differentiation. While some audiophiles may prefer the presentation of music through these materials, we believe that the results are not consistently demonstrable over a wide range of equipment types and listening tastes.

• Long crystal copper and silver sometimes called OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) has become ubiquitous for high-end cables. The notion that electrons are slowed down or somehow corrupted by the crystal boundaries inherent in metal wire may or may not be true in theory. This idea may have some merit for solid core conductors carrying radio frequency or higher signals for long distances. At audio frequencies, small gauge conductors and relatively short distances, OCC wire adds nothing, in our view. We have experimented with this type of wire and we have found that it adds nothing to the enjoyment of music and even diminishes certain aspects of electrical performance. What we don’t know is - what happens to the long crystals over time. Do they maintain their original structure or do they revert back to their multi-crystal state after being bent, or twisted or reheated during the cable assembly process? Dr. Atsumi Ohno of the Chiba Institute in Japan patented the method in 1986.

Since then, only a small handful of companies have licensed the technology and manufacture all the OCC wire used in the high-end audio industry worldwide. If the practical merits of OCC wire could be demonstrated scientifically, it would have made its way to other applications where the markets are much larger.
