CM 9 cabinets with major upgrades from the 800 Diamond series. They feature: 804 Diamond Rohacell bass drivers ($400 each) crossover mods including the chip resistors (much better than ceramic cast, part is from B&W 800 Diamond) ($100 ) CM 10/S2 series double dome tweeters for superior high frequency detail. Lighter and more controlled response at higher frequencies. Drivers are decoupled to keep cabinet vibrations out of the Tweeters diaphragm. ($300 ) 800 Series aluminum phase plugs, for higher mid power handling, and smoother response due to machined aluminum vs carbon Mid compartment is equipped with absorbent rubber lining on rear with Deadening foam, to decrease resonance and dampen back waves. That is over 2 grand in just in upgraded parts on top of the new base speaker price of $3200. Stock CM 9s are 3200 a pair new (stock) and these have over 2 grand in upgrades. All Bowers and Wilkins OEM parts. Freq response is 37hz to 28k +-3db. Power handling is 300 RMS, can handle more peak.

Did you do all these upgrades yourself?
Did B&W give you an idea of what you could or should replace? I have been doing loudspeaker design engineering from a consulting standpoint and wanted to see what we could do the push the envelope with the CM series. They have a solid foundation (Same caps for the most part as the 800 diamond, except for the tweeter) mid is the same except for ceramic vs neo magnet, and they differences lie is (aluminum vs diamond) , square (but matrix braced) box vs curved etc. I strengthened these areas by upgrading the crossover resistors, dampening the mid chamber to get sound close to the 800/802, and upgraded to the Rohacell bass drivers to better control that 100-300 hz boom that they allow to exit through the cone. They keep all that resonance that you do not want to hear, inside the box. Also the stock tweeter is swapped for a CM 9 S2 unit, double dome for response to 50 k, less distortion and of course I preserved the isolated (B&W calls it decoupled) mounting. So these speakers easily beat the CM 10 and 804 diamond in mid clarity (due to Chip resistor vs ceramic for the 804, and the enclosure is better dampened due to my absorbant gel and foam. Also bass performance matches the 804 diamond. High freq performance is quite good, considering the improved mounting interface vs the CM 9s2.
Voicing is still the typical B&W sound, just details are improved. I also considered B&W slightly bright but with manners. Its worth noting with the larger voice coils on the bass drivers they can take very high transients. Its the same voice coil and magnet as the 8" 802 drivers, but in a even lighter 6" cone. Let me know if you have anymore questions. When you consider the stock price was 3200 msrp, and the cost of the upgrade parts (over 2 grand) the asking price is a bargain. |
