GUNTHER SCHULLER/ PAUL FETLER/Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee(1959)—Contrasts for Orchestra (1958) Mercury Living Presence Color-back SR9028.Were commissioned by The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in The American Music Center, under a grant from the Ford Foundation /Antal Dorati, Minneapolis Symphony.
Both works recorded on this disc are scored for modern full orchestra, but there any similarity in technique ends. The schuller studies are essentially miniatures, using small and often exotic combinations of instruments and instrumental choirs; the Fetier CONTRATS is an ebullient score, painted in broad, bold strokes of orchestration and melodic writing.
In spite of this major difference, the two compositions were recorded by one technique, so that the listener could correctly estimate the contrasts between the two.
