The current and very best CD,DVD,DVD-A, CD-R player from digital pioneer Kevin Halverson at MUSE. Choose from active (with preamp) or passive balanced and single-ended outputs. DAC section with four BB1704 chips....one reason it sounds so natural.

This player has an onboard analog preamplifier section from the well-regarded MUSE Model 3 Signature Preamp, which is a true preamplifier with gain, not simply a passive volume control. The player can be connected from variable outputs and used to directly drive your amplifier with volume being controlled from either remote, or it can be connected and played from regular fixed level outputs, so your preamp can control the volume.

Excellent condition. Upgraded by MUSE from Thalia and is fully an Erato II in every way, including newest faceplate. This is the only unit in black you will ever find as Kevin did the color custom.

I compared this player directly in my system against the highly regarded Ayre C-5xe MP player for over a year and I chose to sell the Ayre and keep the MUSE because it sounded better.
Included are both of the solid metal remotes, manual, the like-new factory box and a Hi-fi Tuning fuse.
I simply no longer need this great sounding player.

Every review of this player is positive, including that by Roy Gregory at HiFi+, who said;
"Once you have latched on to what the Muse is all about, I doubt many other players will ever sound the same to you again."

Condition: I will consider offers from Audiogon members with good feedback who reside outside the USA but ONLY if they have a ship-to address inside the USA and a proxy who can accept the shipment and verify condition is acceptable.

Questions for the seller
I own the same player…talk about neutral. Simply one of the best..
Thanks, I agree. I consider it evenhanded, natural and reminiscent of analog but with plenty of drive.
i play only audio discs but do not see sacd or hdcd listed as playable. i have muse's point of sale pieces on erato 2 and map. neither one is very informative. is muse still in biz? can one get service and/or mods?.i've formerly had 2 muse amps and preamps. tech info and service were tough to contact at that time so i'm a bit wary. any light you can shed here will be appreciated. jack (idllwld)
I will respond to your second [filtered] with answers to your questions. - Tim
sorry, i forgot to ask if there is a digital output. i may elect to use any new player as a transport only. why 2 remotes? and when originally built, when rebuilt as erato? jack (idllwld)
Hello Jack, Over the years, I have owned three players and two preamps from Muse. They all worked great and none of them ever needed repair. I have also had two players upgraded and one preamp upgraded to Signature by Muse and, in both cases, the folks at Muse were reasonably responsive and the work was perfect. I believe Kevin Halverson operates as sort of a hermit but he is still in business as a viable audio/digital designer since he is the person behind HRT, who make the small DACs. As far as I know, Muse is still a viable company and their website seems functional. I do remember hearing Muse was not planning new designs for awhile so Kevin could focus on HRT. I do not know whether that will change or not. My last upgrade with them (a preamp) was only a few years ago. Regarding the player, it will do CD, CD/R, DVD, DVD/R, and DVD-A. It does not play SACD, which Kevin believed to be DOA. He put his chips into DVD. One good thing about DVD is that you can download high rez files, burn them to DVD-A, and play them on this machine, which does up to 24/192 resolution. IMO, the CD playback sounds excellent and better than the top Ayre machine I referenced in my ad. I owned both, played them side by side for over a year and kept the Muse. The only reason I am selling is that I do not play discs anymore. You can use this as a stand-alone player/preamp since it has the preamp module which is the same as the Model 3 Signature. Kevin said most of his customers liked the internal preamp better and he thought because it eliminated a set of interconnects. I have not used all of the machine's capabilities but I do know it plays DVD videos and has some multichannel capabilities. I do not believe it has a digital output, except on the HT/Video side of things. My use of the machine was restricted to two channel audio playback so I didn't use a lot of the other features. I never considered running it into a DAC because it sounds so good the way it is. Over the weekend I played a couple of the same CDs on the player as I was playing through my computer source and they sounded virtually identical except maybe just a touch more relaxed through the Muse. The second remote (Remote II) was an extra from when I owned the preamp and I was given my choice of either of the remotes new with the upgrade to Erato II so I chose to have them send me the Remote I (the remote with less buttons). I liked the conventional remote for programming, etc. and the remote with less buttons for everyday play. Both are exceedingly high quality and have never had even a hiccup while in use. You would receive both of them. Regarding the black color, this was done special for me by Kevin and is the same high quality epoxy paint application as the standard grey/white they use on their gear. I don't know what else to say but it works great and I am hoping someone buys it who will enjoy how it sounds. It is not doing me any good sitting in my rack. Let me know if I can answer anything else. Tim Mitchell
