Sublime ROTEL RMB-1075 Five Channel Power Amplifier with 120 Watts Per Channel. Functions Flawlessly and Looks Beautiful. MSRP $1,200! When Joe Atkins assumed control of Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), one of the first things he did as the Chairman was to acquire Rotel, which until that time had been an excellent but somewhat obscure Japanese mid-fi component company began in 1966 by Tomiko Tachikawa. At that time, Rotel was certainly a respected manufacturer in the audio industry field but was certainly not the worldwide success that they are today. In fact, the quality of their organization and manufacturing capabilities were known mostly just to Audio Industry insiders. They were originally known more for their OEM work on other brand names like Harman-Kardon, H.H. Scott and Marantz. Even on Wikipedia, the early history of Rotel ranks only a few sentences and their 30 years of pre-B&W ownership history is hard to find online. Things changed quickly in the mid to late 1980’s when Rotel built their landmark quality budget amplifier (the 820B) as well as their work on manufacturing many early seminal Adcom products – in particular the Nelson Pass designed GFA-535 / 545 / 555 power amp series as well as many of Adcom’s preamps of that era. These were huge successes, and are still loved to this day. While not many know that Rotel actually built those sonically sweet and durable Adcom amplifiers, their success put Rotel permanently on the audio industry map and definitely caught Joe Atkins attention. Immediately after being acquired by B&W, Rotel began an ascension through the tightly packed and highly competitive field of mid-fi audio component brands like Yamaha, Sony, NAD, Denon, Onkyo, etc. to where they are now – a clear step ahead of those brands. Rotel was always considered a high value brand, and it shows in both build quality and sonic signature. Since their acquisition by Bowers & Wilkins they now enjoy world wide distribution and unparalleled success. This Rotel RMB-1075 five channel amplifier is beautifully designed not just from an aesthetic sense, but also a functional standpoint. Rotel is prized for their highly refined and musical sonic presentation, high dynamics and very clean and crisp presentation. It’s also no secret that Rotel amplifiers match up beautifully with B&W speakers, the most successful speaker brand in the world. On every point this Rotel RMB-1075 amplifier delivers the goods. The amp runs relatively cool even when pushed hard. Functionally this amp functions flawlessly, and has been thoroughly tested both hot and cold. It sounds crisp and buttery smooth with a clean, sonically neutral and highly dynamic sound signature which is the hallmark of new era Rotel amplifiers. Cosmetically it looks in excellent condition with minimal cosmetic blemishes - no bent heat sink fins, no dinged edges or mushed corners, no worn lettering, all functions and lights work, the terminations look virtually new. There are some very minor scuffs near the rear terminations, there are a few extremely tiny dings on the front heat sing fins (touched up - virtually invisible), there are a few minor scrape marks on the top surface near the back which I have touched up nicely. There are two tiny two pin point tic marks are on top center silver panel on front. Overall it looks superb! Here is a copy of the Owners Manual for the Rotel RMB-1075 Amplifier: http://www.rotel.com/content/manuals/rmb1075_multi.pdf Specifications for the Rotel RMB 1075 Five Channel Amplifier: * Power Configurations: (20 - 20,000 kHz, 0.03%): … 5 x 120 Watts / Channel into 8 Ohms … 5 x 200 Watts / Channel into 4 Ohms * Total Harmonic Distortion (20Hz-20kHz, 8 ohm): 180 * Input impedance / sensitivity: 33kohms / 1.5V * Signal to Noise Ratio (IHF A network): 116 dB * Power Requirements: 115 volts, 60 Hz (U.S. version) * Power Consumption: 800 Watts * Dimensions (W x H x D): 16.9” x 7.5” x 15.7” * Weight (net): 39.7 lbs.unpackaged This amplifier does not show up on the used market very often, and retailed for $1,200 when new in 2001. The AudiogoN Bluebook shows an average used price of $640 regardless of condition – and many sales between $750 - $900 in Pristine condition when these do come up for sale. That is a testimony to how popular this specific amplifier is, and an excellent indicator of the quality of the Rotel brand in general.
