This was a decade ahead of its time, even today it can give blu-ray a good run for the money.
The primary strength of the C3 is its MPEG-2 interpolation protocols. Built upon a computer platform under Windows 98, Mike Moffat's proprietary algorithms and supporting software take DVD viewing to a new level.....
You also have tremendous flexibility for changing system parameters to your specific needs-- it's as easy as upgrading a PC.
The standard configuration used an AGP video card that I swapped out with an ATI -7500 All in Wonder, I added memory to bring it up to 256 meg from the factory 128, paid $399 for a software update, and replaced the 20 gig hard drive with a 60, but you can always add a bigger one or hook up an external drive by USB. The original USB-1 card might want to be taken out in favor of a 2 or 3........
The factory serial infrared keyboard was really Mickey Mouse-- there are plenty of expansion slots for wifi, and I would recommend an Bluetooth or RF keyboard over the one that came with the machine. The CPU is P-III, but remember this unit is circa 2001, and there's quite enough resources in the system as it stands.
Remote control function is by keyboard, and you can select parameters for scaling to native resolution and refresh rate of your display; you'll need a more capable AGP card to get up to 1080p. I've looked at several options all in the $60-$100 price range.
The metal faceplate over the disc drawer has fallen off and disappeared; the machine came from a medical imaging company that went bankrupt; think of it like a DVD player on mega-steroids. The present transport could easily be swapped out with a blu-ray ROM drive if you want to play discs in that format.
The owners manual was a download off the internet-- I may have bits and pieces of it floating around; I spoke with Mike on the phone about making the best upgrades and modifications I possibly could, as of 2002-2003. You might want to contact him if you're considering buying this system.
Additional features are TIVO function, de-interlacing, scaling to native rate scanning, aspect ratios as desired, refresh and resolution to match any display on the market even today, with making minimal overall changes.
Cosmetically, it has a few bumps and bruises, nothing major, and it works as well today as it did on September 11, 2001.
I do all my audio outboard, so you can put in whatever sound card you want for digital/analogue, and HDMI by upgrading the video card.
