Musical Design SP-2B-HT Preamp with upgrades!

For sale is a Musical Design SP-2B-HT preamplifier, modified and upgraded by its designer, John Hillig. If you know Hillig’s work you know that this is a very special unit. If you don’t, a quick internet search will be helpful.

This unit was an original Platinum Ultra SP-2B that includes the highly regarded (and no longer available!) Black Gate capacitor upgrades. In addition, the following notable upgrades were done on this unit:

- Larger chassis
- All RCA jacks replaced with CMC Silver
- Remote Control
- Home Theater By Pass
- CREE SiC Rectifiers
- Motorola Schottky Rectifiers
- Larger shielded power transformer
- Tube connectors replaced and upgraded
- Rhodium IEC connector
- Upgraded all coupling caps

BTW, this unit beat the Parasound Halo JC2 HTBP in a comparo before it was sent in for the these upgrades.
It is an awesome sounding unit, highly resolving with great detail and big sound stage. So why am I selling it? I was persuaded to go with a very expensive McIntosh preamp that mates well with my McIntosh amp and includes a phono preamp section. The overall sound is different than the SP-2B-HT, though I am not sure it’s better.
