Audiogon Forum: 04-07-06: Robertje A friend of mine uses a LA audio 300B amp (mono amps 8 watt), it's a very fine combination. 3.8 Ohm isn't that low, if i remember right they have a efficiency of 92 db, i think this is more important. Stereo Times - CES 2007 LA Audio P300 caught my attention when they referenced their wonderful sounding P-300 tube monos with none other than the Coherence Stage loudspeakers from Italian Omicron Group Inc ($19,500). This transducer just so happens to be one of my favorite loudspeakers because they employ the seldom seen Heil ESS Air Motion Transfer tweeter. Used in an open baffle design, the sound briefly reminded me of last year’s showroom when designer Mauro Mauri had a showstopper of a sound. Mauri chose not to attend this year's show while LA Audio had the most unfortunate luck of being right next door to the Sunny Cable room where the 700 lb. Majestic Horn Loudspeakers played loud... REAL loud. Considering the room's poor acoustics and close proximity to Mr. Majestic, one wonders if Mauri's no-show proved serendipitous. Enjoy the Music Issue CES 2007 Their P-300 monoblock amplifier follows the same lines of single-ended Class A, has a tube compliment of a 6J8P, 6N8P, two, 5AR4 plus a 300B and produces 12 watts. Output impedance is both 4 and 8 Ohm with an overall frequency response from 20Hz to 15kHz LA Audio P300 Mono Amps - 300B Tubes - Tube Complement: 300B×1,6J8P×1,6SL7(6H9C)×1,5AR4x2 LA Audio's P-845 monoblock tube amplifier operates in single-ended Class A and produces 40 watts using a pair of 6N8P for preamplification, a 300B for driving stage, and an 845 for output. Loudspeaker load/taps from the low-distortion output transformers include 4, 8, and 16 Ohms. Overall frequency response is from 15Hz to 35kHz and internal parts include handmade coupling paper capacitors while the power transformer, driver transformer and EI output transformer are specially manufactured for 845 by applying unique workmanship that has low magnetic leakage, wide frequency response and low impedance. There are a few reviews on LA Audio Products - Positive Feedback POSITIVE FEEDBACK ONLINE - ISSUE 30 P-22 amplifiers and C-22 preamplifier "Pristine" was the first word I jotted down in my notebook after inserting the LA Audio P-22 amplifiers into my system in place of my regular power amp. I was immediately awestruck by the P-22s. The sound was so pure it was almost crystalline, and it floated away from the speakers just like it does with high-priced gear. This was tube sound at its best—clean and revealing, without the warmed-up sauce in the midrange and the flabby, fuzzy bass of yesteryear. This was not what I was expecting from Eastern tube amps, many of which try to resurrect the sound of period amplifiers. The P-22s were not broken in, and I wondered if some of that pristine character was due to fresh tubes or hard capacitors (which are formed by having a working voltage applied over time), so I let the amps play continuously for three days. At the time, I was listening to a large number of 80s-era classical CDs that a friend had brought over to keep me busy. In the 80s, everything was being digitally remastered (just like now, as the recording industry remasters recordings into the new formats), but almost all of the original recordings were analog, and many had excellent analog engineering. They took on new life with the P-22 amps. Later, when I added LA Audio's C-22 line stage into the system, that lovely analog sound became even more pronounced. I kept digging through those old CDs, and enjoying them more than I could remember. Although I felt that the amps and preamp were still breaking in, not only were they sounding better every day, but the sound remained pristine. The music had more weight, but no new coloration. The added musical weight made those classical recordings sound like a dream, even at low volume, with sound pressure levels of about 75 to 85 dB at six or seven feet from the speakers. (You have to protect your cilia—the tiny hairs that make your ears work—by listening at reasonable volumes. Once damaged, cilia cannot be replaced. I've often wondered why audiophiles keep turning up the sound to mind-numbing levels and keep buying more powerful amplifiers. Might it be the result of failing hearing? Be careful out there.) LA Audio, located in Taiwan has been making tube gear since 1988. They employ about a hundred people. That's a lot. I have visited many high-end audio manufacturers, and none have half that number. LA Audio has a full-time R&D staff of up to twenty people, with sales approaching five million dollars a year! In other words, this is not just another quick-start company trying to cash in on the tube craze. They also make transistor amplifiers and loudspeakers, but I have not seen any of these. Positive Feedback ISSUE 52 A-60R integrated amplifier The A-60R is a really gorgeous looking tube integrated amp and is extremely heavy, especially considering it is only 60 watts per channel. LA Audio was established in 1988 and hand craftsmanship is claimed to be the main reason for the high quality of its components. I spent two weeks casually listening to music and watching TV through the A60R while it burned-in, when not at home I ran the Burn-In tones on my XLO/Reference Recordings Test & Burn-In CD. Then I began critical listening using my best SACDs, DVD-As and high resolution music downloads. And in the final week I even listened to regular CDs and MP3's. The amp has a sweet and lovely sound, however on really dynamic material such as big orchestral SACDs, it sounds a little compressed. With most of the program material I played it never sounded like a low-power amp, and in more intimate music it sounds better than many higher powered amps I've heard. The sound was beautiful, relaxing, with good impact, a smooth midrange and excellent deep bass. It has very accurate timbre, a nice large, deep and wide soundstage with excellent imaging. A real pleasure to listen to.
