In a 1995 Stereophile interview with the founder of Cary Audio, Robert Harley writes:
…"Dennis Had is largely responsible for popularizing single-ended amplifiers in America. Since appearing on the scene in 1989, Cary Audio Design has forged its own niche in the high-end audio industry..".. he goes on to speak to Dennis about why he's so committed to single-ended designs….
Flash forward 20 years and we find Dennis in retirement, and having fun pursuing his craft with a renewed vigor for single-ended designs,,, in more of a freestyle, artistic mode…
This ad is for one of his recent creations– a very special single-ended Sweet 807 “Special Edition” in Harley Davidson, gloss black. Please note that this is a “Special Edition” model as noted on the faceplate. If you do a search on “Inspire Sweet 807” the majority, if not all, the ones that show up are the regular version of this amp. I actually contacted Dennis to purchase the regular Sweet 807, and he was in the midst of working on this special edition that would be his best 807amp effort. How could I say no. Dennis offers this amp at a $500 premium. The regular version (in white/almond) is shown in this ad for a comparison.
I find the 807 sound to be somewhere between 2a3 and 300B. It uses two 807 tubes and a single 6sn7 (as the input driver). And, you can use either a 274B or 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier. Dennis much prefers the 274B in this amp. The amp produces a solid 10 watts with plenty of sweetness and slam. It is absolutely quiet on my 97db speakers and has plenty of power to drive my 90db monitors… This amp is rated at 10 watts but it feels like a lot more.
I purchased the amp in December 2013, directly from Dennis. It is in excellent condition. The only minor mar is a slight scratch (not deep, more of a rub) on the back of one of the output transformers (see picture showing back of amp). I received it this way, and it never bothered me as it cannot be seen from the front or top and could easily be touched up. I think the new owner will be really happy with this piece, it has an heirloom quality to it and was hand assembled (point to point wiring) by Dennis, who is real meticulous. So build quality is top notch.  It would be a really nice addition to any collection. The bottom of the amp is signed and dated by Dennis.
I am including a nice tube set with low hours that will last you for years to come.
-- 1 pair of 1952 RCA 807’s -- 1 pair of 1950’s National Union 807’s (Dennis told me that these were his favorite…and I agree.. they have extra support rods…solid beautiful tubes…) -- 1 pair of RCA 1958 JAN CRC-807’s -- 1 1950’s RCA grey glass 6SNGT (for a warmer, more lush presentation) -- 1 1940’s Sylvania 6SNGT (sourced from Andy at Vintage Tube Services – these early Sylvanias simply produce more information and air than any other 6SNGT’s) -- 1 Shuguang 6SN7 which came with the amp -- 1 274B preferred series from the Tubestore that came with the amp (In this category a Sophia 274B would probably be best; but if you do the research on the one that I am providing you will find that it is a respectable tube – sounds great in the amp)
So, I am asking $1300 (it is $1700 new) for the amp and a nice set of tubes. The amplifier will be extremely well packed (check my feedback) and sent by FedEx ground, to the contiguous 48 states at my expense. I will also cover paypal fees if that is your preferred method of payment. I am willing to ship to Canada, but depending on how much the shipping expense is I may not be able to cover all of it. At this point, I am pretty firm on the price.
Finally, I have only seen this mentioned in one other ad related to an 807 amp, but I thought it may be worth mentioning here, so I took the language from that ad. Many of you are well aware of this, and it would take an act of extreme negligence for there to be an issue. But here goes:
Caution: This amplifier with 807 tubes (and any other 807 amplifier) has an accessible contact on each power tube with approximately 300 volts, that is potentially a deadly hazard. The top contact is covered with a porcelain insulated plug that fits snugly on the tube and would have to be removed from the tube to expose the electrical contacts. Still the potential for harm is present with negligent use. I will not be responsible for any injuries resulting from usage of this amplifier. This design feature is disclosed in advance and by buying the amp from this ad you are accepting this condition of the sale.
Once again, you would really have to go out of your way to pry off the caps while the amplifier is on and then stick something in the cap to cause harm.
