For sale: Audio Research SP9 MKIII tubed pre-amp with modifications by Steve Huntley of Great Northern Sound (651/351-5355). Please Google the site for details. Serial #97237036. This unit is in very good cosmetic shape - there are some slight marks behind the rack mounting holes, but as you can see the unit looks good. Stock, this pre-amp is decent, but after Steve's mods it has that tube magic and really lives up to its full potential. The SP9 was one of Steve's favorite AR pre-amps to upgrade because the design is simple, it has only two tubes to replace or roll, and it offers one of the most signifcant "before" and "after" improvements once the mods are done. This is a fully functional preamp with a built-in phono section, six additional pairs of inputs, two recorder outputs, two Main outputs, (extra Cardas outputs), and an IEC power connector so that you can match with your favorite cord. Inside you will find upgraded parts used throughout.
I am including a set of JJ Cryo-Tubes, which will be carefully taped underneath the top cover plate. If you have Mullards, you will enjoy this even more. Original box included. The ARCDB relates that the MKIII was the last revision before being discontinued around 1993? Could you be more specific about the mods performed?

One thing I should note: the caps that you see in the pictures - one went bad some time ago so I had the pair replaced by my go-to audio repair firm in Chicago (I lived there for many years before moving to NYC). I subsequently ordered two large Mundorf caps with the idea that maybe some day I could solder them in myself. But the unit sounds so good that I did not get around to that. If you purchase the unit, I'll include those as well.
