AUDIO RESEARCH SP-10 MK II TUBE PREAMPLIFIER

I have for sale here what is regarded by many, as one of the all-time great Preamplifiers. Rated in the 2012 "Absolute Sound Guide to Audio Electronics", as one of the "12 MOST SIGNIFICANT PREAMPLIFIERS OF ALL TIME", the Audio Research SP-10 is a world class powerful vacuum tube stereo preamplifier. The IAR International Audio Review, put it simply "The Audio Research SP-10 is not state of the art. It is a giant leap beyond the state of the art. The first instant we heard the SP-10, on our lab playback system, we were stunned. Only once before have we ever experienced such a flabbergasting sonic breakthrough".

This particular one is an SP-10 (revision 6), was purchased new, in the late 80s in Los Angeles, CA from Optimal Enchantment. The preamplifier is all original, has not been modified in any way, and sounds just the way it did when new. Since I have always had multiple stereo systems in different rooms for different purposes, this SP-10 has had light but consistent use throughout its life. You can tell is a MKII by the large filter blue caps in the power supply. There was another revision (rev. 7) later done to the output transformer in case you wished to use it for 220V operation.

Beyond the SP-10's incredible musical qualities, this preamplifier contains many unique and useful front panel switches and adjustments. One for the 2 turntable inputs. One to change the impedance, for a wide variety of phono cartridges, not to mention the ability to use most moving coil cartridges without the need for a head-amp. Another switch controls the AC outlets in the rear, so you can switch on the preamplifier, then easily switch on your power amplifiers from the same place. Plus a Stereo/Mono/Left/Right/Reverse switch, and more.

The condition of this preamplifier, I would describe as superb. Using Audiogon's rating system, a 9/10. Please see the photos (additional photos upon request). The preamplifier itself is sonically and mechanically perfect. Cosmetically, it appears virtually perfect, as well. I retubed it recently by obtaining tubes from ARC directly although I added some better tubes for lowest noise. The front face plates on both chassis appear perfect, with no scratches, marks, or blemishes. The tops, sides, and backs, of each chassis, also appear virtually perfect.
