6moons.com gave the STP Special Edition preamp a superb review & a Blue Moon award denoting it as:
"A full featured Reference preamp with a passive's Transparency, active dynamics and tube colors for a highly competitive price made in America"

They compared it to their $10,000 reference Esoteric tube preamp and thought it was as good.

The Conclusion of the Affordable review was:
I'm not sure what else I can tell you that you haven't already gathered for yourself. To say my experience with the STP SE was mind-blowing would be an understatement.
E.J. Sarmento and the gang at Cullen Circuits have truly outdone themselves. It's undeniable my W4S amplifiers added to the STP SE's synergy in my system. However, synergy aside, its virtually unspeakable in the audiophile world to say a tubeless preamplifier possesses all the smooth and inviting characteristics of the most modern and affordable valve units, while at the same time raising the standards of what's expected from a sub-$2k preamplifier to new stratospheric heights. But, that is exactly what I am saying.

The Wyred 4 Sound STP SE is a remote controlled Passive/Active preamplifier. The STP/SE brings the same amazing performance for the dollar value as the Wyred 4 Sound power amps that have received such great reviews.

The STP/SE is sold direct to the end user with no dealer profit margins. If we used dealers this would be a $4000.00 preamplifier. Call me at 770-667-5633 to discuss.

Feel free to listen to any solid state preamp and compare sonics as well as features to our STP. I think you will be amazed at its value.

The STPSE is a fully balanced passive design that has an active gain stage (8dB) that is only used when the volume control is advanced far enough to need it. It has over 164,000uf of power smoothing capacitance. This is far more than most power amplifiers. It is available in both black and silver finishes.

Most of the time you are listening to a fully balanced passive preamp run thru a custom designed fully discrete resistor ladder volume control using Dale resistors. The volume control is controlled from the front panel, or remote control, by an optical rotary encoder. It is accurate to less than 1/10th of a Db per channel.

If you're looking for the ultimate in transparency, in an unbelievably accurate pre-amp with superb dynamics and exceptional imaging then the STP may be for you.

The feature set is amazing.
1) The preamp is fully balanced from input to output.
2) It has 2 sets of XLR balanced outputs as well as 2 sets of RCA single ended outputs.
3) There are 3 sets of single ended RCA inputs and 2 sets of balanced XLR inputs.
4) It has 12v triggers to activate the Home Theater pass thru that is customizable for any input.
5) There is a balance control.
6) There is an absolute phase control
7) There is a customizable multichannel pass thru
8) Made in California
9) Three year factory warranty
10)Available in 120 volt US or 230 volt European versions
11)Available in black or Silver finish

The STP/SE is the giant killer preamp like the Wyred 4 Sound amps that have received reviewer comments like:

"the Wyred 4 Sound is a ground breaking accomplishment that'll bring a new level of power and sophistication to a budget conscious listening audience that could only dream of such performance before."

"The high-end is dead! Long live the high-end! A paradigm shift is upon us now. In the Wyred 4 Sound ST-1000 stereo amplifier, we have a maturing technology that absolutely changes the performance-to-price expectation for solid-state amplifiers in the $2,000 to $10,000 price range."

A few user comments:

1) "The W4S STP is amazing! Out of the box the sound stage was larger and deeper, which resulted in greater transparency and three dimensionality. My first impression was a significant increase in overall clarity and separation. The bass is deep and tight. I've also noticed my CDs have a more vinyl sound in the highs, especially a more natural decay with cymbals that so often get smeared and twangy with lesser preamps. Really I can't believe that this two grand preamp is not only outperforming but putting to shame my former $6000 reference BAT VK-3ix SE, which sells for nearly three times as much.
I had no idea I was missing so much music."

2)Hello Walter,
"Well, you already know how it sounds, but I thought I'd toss in my two cents. Or is it three now, like the price of pretzels? I am a multichannel guy, but when I went from the Arcam AVR 300 as a prepro to an NAD T175, the two channel direct just wasn't as good. Hey, Rick Cullen has a T175, so it can't be all bad! I only made that move to appease the wife. Fewer cables, fewer remotes, etc. I am so pleased with the Wyred 7 channel amp, and I just don't want the heat or fuss of tubes, but I needed a quality preamp for those stereo moments,so I figured The STP-SE might be a good thing. And of course your glowing review helped. Well, I talked with EJ and decided to break in the unit with some 60K resistors. I just can't stand the agony of burn in, not only for the uncomfortable listening, but one always wonders if you listen to it for too long, does it trick you into becoming convinced that this is your reference standard? For those reasons, I let it cook for about 80 hours and then hooked it up and put in one of my CD's I use for evaluation. It caused me to utter the F word! I was stunned to say the least. Talk about revealing the detail, and more about that in a minute. By now it was almost midnight, and I had wrestled with enough cables and interconnects bending over that I was exhausted. It's a good thing they aren't powered by DC or I would have a giant electromagnet!
Thinking a good test of overall sound would be a little Bob Marley in went the reggae. Remember, by now I'm getting kind of punchy at the late hour. I listened carefully to the first four tracks and took some notes. Yes, much clearer with more definition than before. Better highs, lows just the same, midrange strong. Then I realized it wasn't playing through the processor into the subwoofers, because IT WASN'T EVEN HOOKED UP! The bass was so much better I thought the subs were playing!
The next morning I got serious. The soundstage widened on some cuts to actually outside the walls of the room. I really don't like the compressed sound from 2 channel compared to 5 channel ( I'm referring to the ambience effect, not frequency compression). However, the field from the STP sort of wraps around the room and I could easily forget the fact stereo is the source. It is that good. The sheer clarity alone is stunning, but coupled with the Wyred amp, the bass is absolutely in another realm. It simply pulls out sound that wasn't audible on the prepro. Kudos to EJ for his design work, because this sounds so tube like in the midrange I am not sure if I could tell the difference in a blind test. It would take a mighty big tube amp to drive the bass like this, and it would get really hot.
I am so pleased now with 100 hours on the unit I had a couple of tube freaks over this morning to listen. They had a hard time grasping that the sound was coming from something solid state, and one readily admitted it sounded better than his tube preamp. In context, it is unlikely that I personally could hear anything better even if there was something out there. The difference between CD and SACD is magnified. All the flaws in bad recordings are brought out, but oh the sonic fidelity that emanates with a newer high end digital recording! This is a real winner, and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.
And I don't think they should offer the standard model. Why demote yourself?" MB
