The Ampzilla2000 is a step forward in the continuing evolution of solid state audio power amplifier design. This is the result of many years of work which has produced improved results over previous designs. Of course, the improvements are in both bench performance as well as sonic benefits. Over the last 30 years many refinements have been made in audio circuit design however, very few of these refinements have actually resulted in improved sonic reality. The original Sumo amplifiers were the world’s very first full four-quadrant balanced bridge amplifiers and were certainly a giant step in amplifier circuit design. However, there were two areas that needed improvement. The first was the input single ended to balanced converter. A totally new never before used unity gain composite amplifier has been developed which provides astounding balance. This new composite circuit has but a single feedback loop yet provides absolutely perfectly balanced outputs to drive the main balanced inputs of the bridge power amplifier. In addition, being an FET input circuit, the input impedance can be adjusted to any impedance that may be required, such as might be with a tube preamplifier.
The input stage of the main power amplifier is identical to the original Sumo amplifiers. In other words, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This dual-differential circuit is where the main four quadrant feedback is applied. The biggest improvement comes in the second stage which is another first. This stage is a cascode connected compound which has never before been used in audio circuits. Since this stage is where the full output voltage of the amplifier is developed, it is here where almost all of the design work was centered. The output stage is exactly identical to the previous Sumo amplifiers which for over 20 years has been the most linear and reliable circuit in so far developed.
Other amenities are a totally new grounding scheme which once and for all totally eliminates all ground loops no matter how subtle. In addition, the entire chassis is 14 gauge steel which virtually eliminates stray flux from radiating into other equipment. In addition, the transformer is a 2500 VA torodial which allows the amplifier to drive virtually any load impedance without fuss or muss.
The original Ampzilla which was a Stereo 200 watt per channel unit weighed in at about 52 lbs. Interestingly, the new Ampzilla2000 mono-blocks weigh 52 pounds EACH.
