For sale is an upgraded stereo amplifier. For details on the basic version before the upgrade, please Google “Spectron Musician 2 Stereo Times”. The reviewer concluded that this amp“…comes as close to my idea of perfection as I've yet encountered. In terms of power, dynamics, attack, control, presentation, grace, resolve, involvement and voicing, I don't know of a single amplifier, at any price, that would embarrass the Spectron Musician II. It has more successfully achieved that delicate balance between brute force and artistic expression than any amplifier I've had the pleasure of hearing. And at $3500, that makes it possibly the best value in amplification available today.
When I first heard the amplifier, I agreed with his evaluation. Then, since I have years of experience with audio electronics, I realized that the power supply, although oversized with + - 120 volts (240v total) dc was a very basic design. It seemed that John Ulrich’s creation with 10x faster feedback and tremendous headroom was so good that a basic power supply was sufficient.
Applying the guidelines stated in a TNT Audio’s 3-part article “Solid State Power Amplifier Supply”, I made this amplifier sound even better.
Here is a summary:
1-Replaced the 25 amp rectifier bridge with a 35 amp version.
2-Added four RC networks with large wattage resistors to remove high frequency noise by converting it to heat.
3-Filled the available space inside the chassis with 24 1500mfd 160 volt capacitors connected with 10 AWG wire to add quickness and capacity to the available instantaneous stored power.
4-Added small-value bypass capacitors at several locations to reduce the inductive effects of larger capacitors and to suppress high frequency noise.
5-Extended heat sinks on the amplifier modules
6-Extended feet for better ventilation
The results made an already great amplifier sound even better. The bass is tighter and more defined. The mids and highs are cleaner and quieter with a more highly palpable sense of locations of the instruments. When powered continuously, it is only slightly warm to the touch and draws just over 40 watts at idle.
I had many conversations with Simon Thatcher, Spectron’s technical advisor and guru who is sadly, recently deceased. When I told him what I had done, he was ecstatic. He explained that he joined the Spectron team after the chassis size and power supply design had been finalized and always wanted more capacitance and filtering, even though it outperformed most $10,000 or under amplifiers on the market.
Spectron’s production manager and chief of operations, Manh Nguyen, will offer a 1-year warranty on this amplifier, should I sell it.
