Moon 220i DEMO Integrated Amp w/Box, Packing, Remote $750

Moon Audio is one of our favorite brands, and their integrated amps are particularly good values.

They typically have moderate power, very high current, and circuitry that would not be out of place in a product selling in a much higher price range.

• This MOON 220i is an integrated amplifier, it was a demo in the store, and it is in SILVER finish.
• It comes with the remote control, power cord, manual, and original box and packing.
• It is in nice shape, with a few scratches on the volume knob (see photo).
  

If the scratches bother you, I’m fairly sure MOON can sell you a new knob for not a lot of money!

Moon recently updated their styling of this series, and this is one of the older versions with the “flat face” front panel.

It has lots of inputs, including a handy front panel 1/8-inch jack for an MP3 player.

The preamp section is very clean and quiet. On the rear panel are preamp output jacks.

These can be used in the future if you desire more power and want to add a large power amplifier, using this piece as a preamp. The preamp section is good enough so that connecting it to a $4000 amp would certainly not be out of place.

Even better, you could, in the future, BI-AMP, using an external amp for the BASS and the internal amp for the HIGHS.

Since the power amplifier in this amplifier is CLASS-A UP TO 5 WATTS OUTPUT, that makes a lot of sense. The upper frequency tonal character of this MOON is smooth and open, even at very low volumes…the trademark of CLASS-A amplifiers.

Power on the amplifier is moderate, at 40 Watts per channel, but current delivery is very high, so the output doubles to 80 Watts per channel into 4-Ohms.

This is made possible in part by the extensive use of aluminum in the chassis to draw heat away from the transistors, so they run cool for long life without needing huge heatsinks which mean a bulky chassis.

The headphone amplifier section has been given particular attention, with a full-bodied sound and ample output.

Inside, this amp is typically MOON, which is to say not just neat, but almost a work of art, as amplifiers go. It looks like it could sell for twice the asking price.

There is very little exposed wiring, and the board layout is as neat as can be.

Moon often likes to show off the internal construction of their products. Compared with much of the “designed here and made in China” competition, there is simply no comparison, construction-wise.

The noise level is 101dB down, making this a good choice to use with even sensitive speakers that reveal any noise.

The volume control is a true high quality motorized potentiometer, so it is continuous, not in steps.

There are no tone controls and no phono preamp in this model.
