Up for sale is a pair of the renowned Boulder 250AE amplifiers: serial numbers: A113 and A169. This pair offers much of the performance of the current 1000 series but at real world price. I have owned all the classic series of Boulder amplifiers: 102AE, 250AEs, and the 500AE. To my ears a pair of 250AE monos offer the best listening experience as they offer the famous Boulder transparency with enough power to drive even electrostatics such as the Innersound Eros speakers.
My latest speakers, the power hungry MBL 121s, want lots of current and simply work better with the Krell KMA-160 monos so this pair of 250AEs and some other amps will be sold. Of the mono amps I own, these are the best value in terms of performance / dollar.
Selectable between stereo and mono via back panel switch so these could be used as two stereo amps if desired. All the factory updates plus new caps on the main board and output boards and a final a health check.
XLR inputs only so an adapter is required if you have RCA preamp outputs. If interested, a pair of Boulder RCA - XLR adapters can be negotiated as part of the deal.
These are fixed 110V only. I checked with Boulder about 220V operation - no more dual voltage transformers exist. If you want to use outside North America, you will need a step down transformer.
Boulder amplifiers have sophisticated built in protection against too much DC on the input signal, output shorting and clipping. The amplifier is designed to shut down before destroying your speakers and may save you lots of money and grief down the road. When powering down, sometimes a popping noise will be transmitted through the speakers. This is common for the AE series of Boulder amplifiers and not indicative of an issue.
Why buy some other 15+ year old amplifier that may be compromised by aging capacitors and then eventually pay for service or a capacitor update. Current cost for recap at the Boulder factory is about $500 per amp.
Detailed photos available upon request.
Will ship in new Boulder boxes with one owners manual. Shipping dimensions and weight are for a single amplifier.
