It would be hard to think of another relative newcomer to the world stage that has had more of an impact on high end audio than Sonus faber. Franco Serblin founded Sonus Faber in Italy in 1983 and the company has become a fixture in designing and manufacturing incredibly stylish, elegant and sonically sweet loudspeakers. Now imported into the USA by Sumiko, the name Sonus faber is derived from Latin and means "handcrafted sound". It is a term that is repeated constantly when talking about their custom drivers, their high quality crossovers and their exquisite hand crafted cabinets. Sonus faber does not make inexpensive speakers – their mouth watering Sonus faber Flagship ‘Fenice’ speakers are priced at a mind numbing $160,000! These Sonus Faber Concertino Home speakers retailed for ‘just’ $995 in 2000 without the incredibly beautiful (and heavy!) optional stands, which were $450 for the pair of metal stand mounts that are clad in the same matching gorgeous Walnut wood panels. These stands are custom designed specifically for the Concertino Home model, and have two knurled attachment screws on the bottom to fit the speakers precisely. Besides looking beautiful and having beautiful matching walnut side panels, they are quite sturdy and heavy. The speakers are virtually in mint condition, as are the matching stands. They function flawlessly, and the drivers are pristine. The cabinets are also spectacular, and even up close they look almost new. The leather covering the top and rear is smooth and not weathered or stained. There is one microscopic nick near the bottom of the rear panel – no material is missing and you have to look very hard to notice it. The front baffle is essentially perfect. The gorgeous solid wood panels that clad the sides are elegantly sculpted and are also near perfect with no apparent marks even on close inspection. The custom Sonus faber terminations are like new. There is some very mild scuffing on the bottom surface. The grill frames and original grill fabric are also like new – no stains, holes, or tears and the original badges are in place . These speakers have been meticulously cared for and never abused, and they look and sound like new. The speakers are mirror imaged, the front baffle has an angle to time align the drivers, and the speakers are magnetically shielded. Please note that these are 88 dB speakers and really need a quality amplifier of 75 watts or more with lots of dynamic headroom to properly make these speakers open up and really sing. You are wasting your investment in these without a quality pure amplifier. When properly spaced and with good amplification, these truly are sonic marvels with an intensely musical, nuanced and very smooth delivery with a very wide soundstage. These are very intimate speakers that breath life into vocals and traditional instruments at moderate volume levels and were never designed to rock the house – there is a world of other speakers that have higher dynamics for that purpose and these Concertino Home speakers were not designed for dynamic impact – they were designed for fidelity and accuracy. There is a reason that they command more than 70% of their retail price on the used market – these are fantastic speakers! Note that when looking up reviews of these speakers there are quiet a few other Sonus faber designs that use almost identical names – “Concerto”, “Concerto Domus”, “Concerto Home”, “Concertino”, “Concertino Domus”, and these Concertino Home, etc. These are all different model speakers from the “Concertino Home” speakers that I am selling.
