Reviews:

Stereophile by Sam Telig May Issue 2013

Sam Tellig gives the new Opera Mezza loudspeakers a rave review. Sam says the Mezzas are the “classic Italian mini-monitor–the type of loudspeaker for which Italy is known.” Thanks, Sam!

Audio Revolution: Written by Andre Marc April 2013

Ray Lamongtagne’s vocal on “You Can Bring Me Flowers” -- from his superb second album, Til The Sun Turns Black -- sounded exquisite through the Mezzas. As did the excellent horn arrangement and creeping bass line

The Mezzas also wonderfully handled the delicate ballad “Lesson Learned” with equal aplomb. The Mezzas versatility was rare for a speaker in this price range. I felt they were tailor made for chamber pop, like that of Brooklyn-based collective, Hem. The Mezzas allowed their second album Eveningland to float by like a summer day.

Internally, the bass reflex loaded Mezza sports a five-inch Scanspeak woofer, and a one-inch SEAS tweeter, the same used in the Secondas, by the way. The Mezza is fairly substantial for a monitor, weighing more than any other mini monitor I have auditioned. And it is pretty deep, measuring 11 inches from front baffle to back panel, where there is small port near the top of the enclosure. Opera also sells an optional matching stand that bolts to the speakers via threads on the bottom of the Mezza.

The Mezzas were unique in several ways. They offered the quickest, most nimble timing I have heard at anywhere near this price point. They were light on their feet, and extremely precise. Imaging and detail retrieval were very impressive. These were not classic BBC-styled, midrange-focused monitors. Driver design, materials, and cabinet construction have come a long way.

I delighted in the excellent dynamics and clear top end. Instruments like cymbals, percussion, and piano had nice articulation and definition. Coherence was also very good, with nuances in recordings nicely spotlighted, but no undue attention called upon them. I thought the midrange was clean and open, and that really allowed good vocal recordings to shine. An example includes Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora, whose albums are a delightful Portuguese and African jazzy hybrid, with her delicate vocals front and center. Her Cafe’ Atlantico album is beautifully recorded, and plays to the Mezzas strengths, with excellent tonality, and her voice nicely framed.

Feedback Honorable Mention CES 2013

We also had the chance on the last day to hear the smaller, stand mounted Mezza speakers from Opera ($1495). We played a wide variety of music on these, and I think they'll give any small, stand mount $1500 speakers serious competition.

We spent a lot of time in this room over the four days of CES just listening to tunes, letting out feet relax and our ears recover. You have to find a few rooms for that when covering a show, and they have to have excellent sound.

The NEW Mezza just released in October 2012! available in cherry, mahogany real Wood Veneer, white and black finishes. The leatherette on the baffle, which extends from the front of the speaker over the top and down the back, adds to both the unique aesthetics of the speaker as well as its stunning performance.

While the Mezza from Opera Loudspeakers is the smallest model in the recently revamped Classica line, it clearly offers a huge dose of the same open, powerful and musical sound of larger speakers such as the Grand Mezza, Seconda and Quinta. This small stand-mounted 2-way speaker is a bass-reflex loaded loudspeaker with an internal volume of slightly less than eight liters, and can produce rich, deep sound in small or medium-sized rooms. It also excels as a nearfield monitor, and the listener can enjoy a giant, detailed soundstage when listening from five feet away or less.

The secret of the Mezza's impressive sounds is partially due to its excellent components. The SEAS woofer, designed specifically for use with the Mezza, is formed with a paper diaphragm that has been subjected to a double treatment that effectively dampens the break-up without increasing the mass of the driver. The motion of the cone is decompressed by the dust cup, which is acoustically transparent. The linear displacement of the diaphragm is 10 mm long and provides good performance even at low frequencies while reducing intermodulation distortion in the midrange. The heavily-modified Scanspeak tweeter is identical to the high-frequency drivers used in all the models of the Classica line and has a one-inch dome, compression chamber and ferrofluid. With careful positioning against the room boundaries, the Mezzas achieve a frequency response of 45 Hz to 25 kHz.
