For sale vintage McIntosh MC7100 Two-Channel Power Amplifier.
The McIntosh name is an icon in the audiophile world when it comes to tube and solid state amplification. The MC7100 (and its multi-channel brethren: MC7104, 7106, 7108) is all McIntosh through and through in reference to design, performance and protection. The unit appearance is simple however, made up of the traditional McIntosh front glass panel (sans VU meters) with illuminated gold nomenclature, left/right POWER GUARD LED’s and a power on LED. The definition of simple ends here with the use of four complimentary output transistors per channel to provide a high current output to assist in driving uneven speaker loads. Speaker impedance changes with frequency. When speaker impedance drops below the rated value, the MC7100 produces the high current necessary to safely power those lower loads. In turn, this high current amplifier is protected with the exclusive McIntosh Sentry Monitor protection circuits without compromising performance. In addition, the MC7100 also features the patented McIntosh Power Guard circuit, which prevents amplifier overdrive and the subsequent amplifier clipping that can result in speaker damage. This unit is rounded out with a low noise, toroidal transformer. This unit was U.S.A. manufactured in Binghamton, NY.
Power output is conservatively rated at 100W and 150W into 8 ohm and 4 ohm loads respectively. The MC7100 may be bridged with a power output of 300W into an 8 ohm load. THD is less than 0.005% (practically distortion free). This unit uniquely features adjustable input sensitivity to assist in matching it with your favorite preamplifier. 2.5V is the detent position. This unit also includes the McIntosh PANLOC runners in the chassis. The PANLOC mounting brackets, hardware and mounting template are included.
This unit is rated at a very conservative “7” for age, some nicks and scratches on the top of the faceplate and scratches on the top of the chassis. These are captured in the photos. The faceplate glass is perfect with no cracks, chips or scratches. The silk screened nomenclature and simple design work has no separations and shows no wear. The illumination of the nomenclature (“McIntosh”, “MC7100”, “Stereo Power Amplifier”) is fully operational. The LED’s for “power on” and “power guard” left and right are operational. The amplifier is fully functional providing a neutral to slightly warm sound. It matches up well with both monitors and floor standing speakers.
I personally really enjoy this amplifier. I own three additional MC7100’s and use them regularly in my various systems.
This is a rare opportunity to experience the McIntosh sound, performance and solid build quality at an affordable budget price.
