An extraordinary career that began when jazz began in New Oreleans before the turn of the century. His associates were such monumental figures as King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. By 1910 he was a successful bandleader. In 1916 he and Oliver had what Louis Armstrong calls “one of the hottest bands to ever hit New Orleans”. In 1921, in Los Angeles, he made the first recordings by a New Oreleans Creole jazz band.. Ory gave Armstrong his first job; made the famous Hot Five records with him in the mid ‘20s.

Ory was dubbed “THE KID” in New Orleans because he was so successful so young, but never was the name more appropriate than today.
