PROPRIETARY WIRE

We are one of the very few specialist audio wire manufacturers, making the wire used in our cables from raw gold and silver, using proprietary methods. We designed our previous wire-making method between 1994 and 2004, when we launched Antipodes Audio.

Following research into three key scientific areas; the Neuroscience of human hearing; Physical Chemistry of the behaviour of metals when conducting complex signals; and Metallurgy of wire created under differing conditions; we have taken a large step forward with a new wire-making methodology. The key to our wire is that we achieve very high purity and simple crystal structure with very low characteristic resonance. The lack of high resonant energy enables our cables to sound more natural and more timbrally accurate.

In simple terms, we design our wire-making methods to produce what to the human ear/brain is an ideal combination of purity, ductility, and crystalline structure. No magic, just the application of theory and experimentation by listening, and precise manufacturing.

PROPRIETARY CABLE GEOMETRIES

Nearly all high-end audio cables use complex geometries to achieve what is thought to be desirable levels of resistance, capacitance and inductance. But complex geometries that involve twisting or braiding, and close spacing of conductors, result in high levels of interference between the conductors, causing multiple small phase errors that challenge the ear/brain process, obscuring detail, causing fatigue, and hampering the emotional connection of the brain with the music.

We run conductors in very simple litz geometries with precise, constant and relatively wide spacing in order to minimise interference between conductors, and minimise the complexity of the interactions. The mix of gauges and spacing adheres to a formula that is aimed to minimise each of the types of time-domain errors and noise that occur in cables, by setting them in opposition to one another. Our latest cable range has benefited from refinements to these formulae.

This 'antipodal' geometry yielded the company's name when it was formed in 2004. Naturally, the actual geometries differ significantly between digital, analog interconnect and speaker cables because of the different interfaces they are designed to interact with, but the underlying mathematics is the same. The result is accurate phase coherence.

PROPRIETARY COTTON INSULATION

The music signal carried by a cable travels as much in the field that surrounds the wire, as in the wire itself. If you interfere with one then you impact on the other. Nearly all high-end audio cables on the market, including those claiming an air dielectric, and those using just a thin layer of cotton insulation, still put plastics in the signal’s field.

Plastics cannot store and release energy as fast as the signal changes, particularly at higher frequencies, inducing a time-smeared signal back into the wire. The plastics most commonly used in high-end audio cables tend to smear treble information in a way that accentuates leading edge transients, bleaches tonal colour and obscures fine detail. This time-smearing of the signal also hampers our ability to identify sounds by their timbre, but is often mistaken for 'detail' at first listen. To re-balance the perspectives audio companies often introduce 'filtering' into the electrical properties of their cables. But attenuating the high frequencies is not an ideal way to compensate for the smearing of high frequencies.

Woven cotton is very nearly as perfect a dielectric as air, contains mainly air, and importantly can be woven to be a resilient, flexible and consistent mix of cotton and air. Perfecting the weaves used has resulted in a successful and practical insulation that radically reduces time-smearing of the music signal. In our latest range we have moved from using a single weave to a dual-weave construction. This provides a very resilient cotton core that is very difficult to compress, resulting in the conductor gaps remaining precise and constant along the length of the cable. Between the wires and the outer fabric layer is a softer weave introducing much more air, benefiting the dielectric performance, where compression of the cotton is much less an issue. The outer layer includes a simple technique to ensure the cotton does not absorb moisture as humidity rises, and we have not changed that.

The result is greater speed, openness, naturalness and fine detail resolution, without the leading edge hardness and emphasis of many audiophile cables. The effect is perhaps less ‘spectacular’ on first listen, but you are no longer weighing up 'more resolution' versus 'more ease' - because you are getting both at the same time. The superior time-domain accuracy yields sound that is more natural and real sounding, without any loss of speed and detail.
