There is damage to the right front, bottom corner of one that seems less noticeable with the plinth bolted on. The other has two small "dents" on both rear edges. These are very faint, and can only be seen in good light at very close observation. These speakers
still come with full manufacturer's warranty.

In many ways Monitor Audio has perfected the design of the living
room tower speaker, in particular if you live in an apartment where
floor space is a premium. These Silver 5i / 5 speakers are both
beautiful and unobtrusive, and at 91 dB are very easy to drive. While
these are both slim and relatively short with a very small ‘footprint’,
they are every bit a full spectrum speaker with no real sonic weakness.
It is somewhat of a mystery how Monitor Audio has been able to produce
such a rich and open sound from what are essentially very diminutive
tower speakers. They produce a very clean, very rich and full bodied
sound, and not at all thin sounding like you might expect from such a
small volume enclosure. Part of the secret is that Monitor not only
reinforces the cabinets like most quality companies do, they also veneer
the interior of the cabinet instead of having them raw like most. The
cabinets have rear ports which can be tuned both by proximity to a rear
wall or corner (increasing bass response), and also partially blocking
the ports with virtually any material (diminishing bass frequency
response but speeding it up). The woofers are the “C-Cam” models that
have a ceramic composite layer on the surfaces for rigidity in excluding
unwanted standing wave cone distortion.

One of the keys to the terrific Monitor Audio sound is their
exceptional tweeters, which are truly superb. Very detailed, nuanced and
extremely musical - these are exceptional tweeters by anyone’s
standards - they really are amazing. However, unlike most metal dome
tweeters, these are definitely non-fatiguing – very sweet sounding that
can be listened to all day. Note that these are split pair of speakers
in that one is a model 5i, and the other is a model 5. Both variants of
the Silver 5 / 5i were released in 1999, with the 5i trailing the
original 5 by just a few months. I have confirmed with the Monitor Audio
factory that for all practical purposes the Silver 5 and the Silver 5i
are in fact the same speakers – these have exactly the same drivers,
same crossovers, same cabinets, same grills, same plinths, same
terminations, same port and – most importantly – they sound identical
and have the same performance specifications. The only difference is the
ballast hatchway seen on the rear panel below the termination cup where
there is a small hatchway that opens to a reservoir space on the
bottom. On the model 5 it is a square panel with four screws, on the
model 5i that panel was changed to a round plastic press fit plug –
definitely a cost cutting re-design, and one that does not affect sound
quality in the least. This reservoir holds approximately 7 pounds of
sand or lead shot ballast if you choose to fill it, and has a very
positive effect on the bass response. Note that both reservoirs are
currently empty. Also note that while there are two identical looking
5.5” mid / bass drivers on each cabinet, they are in fact designed via
the crossover to act as two different drivers. The lower mid / woofer
rolls off at its upper limits, and the upper mid / woofer is crossed
over specifically at 3,100 Hz.

Functionally, these speakers are flawless – they perform as new.
Cosmetically, they look sensational and they appear virtually new as you
can see on the photos. The drivers are absolutely pristine – there are
no marks on any of the drivers.
