Meridian DSP5500 (1/2pair) Digital Active Loudspeaker. Perfect for center channel !!!

Great full range speaker in a half pair, was used in Weinhart Design’s active Meridian DSP 5.1 Demo system as a FULL RANGE CENTER Channel. 

Condition is not great (still a fantastic value) but the sound is wonderful and perfect for a screen wall or in a cabinet with a outer grill or used as it is (see pictures).

The Display screen is cracked. Please refer to pic’s to view damage. Speaker works perfectly fine & would be an amazing fit to any home theater where the unit might be located in a wall or cabinet with a custom speaker grill to make it vanish.

The facts :

The speakers accept purely digital signals , A dual Phase locked loop anti-jitter circuit cleans the digital signal up , it is then processed by Motorola DSP chips which take care of crossover , tone and room correction , balance , listening height adjustment and so forth , from there the signal is split into 4 . Each of treble , midrange and 2x bass going to its own DAC (18 bit delta sigmas , but a 24/96 upgrade is now offered and I will report on this when it arrives) and thence to to a 75 watt amp for each Driver. Drivers are SEAS units , the treble being a metal cone with a silver voicecoil especially made for Meridian, midrange is a custom polyprop Seas unit with a phase plug center (6 1/2") and the 2 bass units are 8" doped long throw custom Seas units.

Midrange sits in its own enclosure , this is a internal ,from the front one sees an integrated speaker. 

Bass is ported to the rear with a transfer slot. These are big full range Digital active speakers , imposing looking , deeper than wide , and weighing in at about 140 + lbs apiece , there are removable side panels with steel linings , these serve to brace the speaker exceptionally well as well as to enable owners to refinish these side slabs , or manufacture their own to suit decor (I replaced the black ones with oak , and used a thicker wood , thus my speakers are VERY well damped and a tad heavier, I refinished the semi gloss stock panels to Piano gloss black) Meridian supply all connectors , 2x 8 meter digital and communications chords , and they are actually very good cables indeed , unobtrusive and easy to hide.

The speakers are rated to go as low as 28 hz and output levels are well in excess of 114db. I seriously doubt that anyone would explore the ultimate loudness of these speakers. The DSP5500’s accept 2 digital inputs , but no analog , thus for tape , tuner and LP one had to use an AD convertor (I can see the vinyl folk shudder ;) The System remote is all one needs to operate these speakers , one can designate either speaker as a receiver and one merely points the remote at the speakers to access all the functions , if one has a full meridian system , the speakers then control the WHOLE system , marvelous functionality.

Essentially the speaker offers many options which increase user configurablity way over and above others. One has modes to compensate in the deep bass for room placement , going so far as to offer a setting for corner placement, one can adjust the speakers for listening height , for midrange, for bass and then there is the tilt function. Tilt is a sort of treble control , with a hinge point at about 1khz , as you raise or lower treble , the tone curve tilts about this hinge point , and bass decreases as treble increases and vice versa , this works very well and combined with the other controls allows exceptional flexibility.

The speaker does attenuation in both the digital and analog domain, this is totally transparent , the signal in the speakers lives at the 22 bit level , thus one would need a lot of digital attenuation to get to the 16 bit level , 6db attenuation under normal circumstances is equivalent to a 1 bit decrease in resolution , the DSP5500’s NEVER drop below 16 bits of resolution. Balance is accomplished in an odd way, instead of actually decreasing one channel , the sound is both attenutated and delayed , thus the virtual physical effect is to actually rotate the speakers , this too works very well , fart better than the conventional system.

One also can flip absolute phase via the remote. It must be borne in mind that all this is done in the digital domain. The amps are matched to each of the drivers , thus are optimised for their frequency band and to the drivers characteristics , due to the fact that there is digital cross over with slopes that analog could never hope to
achieve , each driver is working in its optimal range. There is also a further adjustment that can be made , one can alter the level of both bass and treble drivers by a few DB in 1/2 db steps using inbuilt test tones , thus one can either match both channels exactly or compensate for different drivers when replacing one , or just have a further adjustment option available. This "option" is not recommended to be done by a user , the speakers are calibrated at the factory , in fact one has to change some jumpers in the remote to do so. The speakers come with spikes and blunt wooden floor "cones"
