$70,000 Genesis 200 / 201 4-Tower Reference Speaker System in

Exquisite Rosewood Finish, the best Hybrid / Upgraded System of this series

This listing is for a complete $70,000 Genesis 200/201 4-Tower Reference Speaker system. This is a true reference speaker system. Very few systems like this are ever made, few dealers carry them and few people will ever have a chance to own one. But here is a chance to get a complete system in perfect condition for a price comparable to what you would pay for 2 regular little box speakers. For some reason, the pictures do not make these speakers look or feel nearly as big as they do when you get in the room with them. As soon as I walked into the room, I was shocked, even though I had seen pictures of them and knew the published dimensions as well. The work and materials that went into creating these is staggering. And they can play loud, effortlessly. But they also have a softness and a delicacy about them that are something to behold. When you have this many drivers, stacked this high, there are simply things you can do that smaller speaker designs just cannot approach due to the laws of physics. These speakers are for someone who loves music and doesn’t mind having a speaker that makes a prominent impression in the room. You don’t need a huge room necessarily, though if you have one that is fine. But these are speakers on a grand scale that you rarely see. And this pair are very unique in their composition and how they have been cared for. Because of that and because I am selling these for a very good customer of mine about whom I care deeply I am going to write a lot about them. If you don’t want to read the whole story, you just want the specs and the pictures, they are below. Feel free to skip the whole story. I want to do a great job representing these since I am selling them on consignment for a really good man. He’s already gone ahead and bought a lovely pair of speakers from me to replace them and that is the only reason that he is parting with these at all. He had thought he would probably keep these for life but an opportunity came along he couldn’t pass up. More on that below.

These speakers are the work of legendary speaker designer Arnie Nudell. Arnie is renowned not only for his work at Genesis but also for work at Infinity where he created the massive though hilariously named "IRS " the Infinity Reference System which was considered by many to be the first ultra high end speaker system due to it’s performance, size and not least a price tag of $65,000. Like Mr. Mark Levinson, Arnie Nudell sold Infinity to Harman Kardon when Harman was on a buying spree buying up top-notch audio companies. He used the money from that sale to found Genesis Technologies where he designed several notable models. The flagship $235,000 model is basically an updated Infinity IRS system. The Genesis 200 and 201 series represent the next step down in price and something that is easier to drive and to live with. This pair represents your chance to get a full size Genesis reference 4-tower system at a price that is more in line with what you expect to pay for 2 average sized floor standing speakers from a top brand.

This pair is a hybrid between the Genesis 200 and the Genesis 201’s. This pair features the best features of both of those models. The Genesis 200’s used Carver ribbons. For the 201’s they switched to the much more advanced Bohlender Graebener (BG Radia) ribbon tweeters. That was a huge upgrade and made the 201 a far superior speaker to the 200. This particular one-owner pair of speakers was purchased new by my customer, Terry, as a pair of Genesis 200’s. It turned out they were the last run of 200’s made.

Shortly after this pair of Genesis 200’s were made Genesis switched to the BG ribbon tweeters, a new aluminum domed servo woofer to replace the Kevlar servo woofers, a new servo amp, and the 201 designation. However, with the benefit of hindsight, only the BG ribbons turned out to be an upgrade, and a huge upgrade they were. The "new " woofers and new servo amp had a lot of problems and were phased out. In many cases people who bought Genesis 201’s modified them by putting in the brown Kevlar woofers from the 200’s because these turned out to perform better and last longer. Likewise the new "tall" servo amp had a lot of problems and was phased out. So this is a very special and unique pair. It was purchased as one of the last production run 200’s but it was immediately upgraded to the BG ribbons that are the only upgrade really worth having in the 201’s. Of course along with the change from the Carver ribbons to the BG ribbons the crossovers were also updated to match the BG ribbons. There were also some small modifications done to this servo amp to improve it and my client says they made a very noticeable difference to the sound. So you get the best of both worlds here. These are VASTLY better than any 200’s because the BG ribbons so far outperform the Carvers. And you have the preferred and longer lasting "short" and "brown" woofers that if you read any of the Genesis forums you will see are truly the preferred woofers.

This is a one-owner pair of speakers. They have been lovingly cared for in not only a dedicated room but actually a dedicated audiophile building. Some would call it a man-cave but there is nothing cave-like about this room, it’s a warm and wonderful space where audiophiles of both genders would feel right at home. Pet free, smoke free, kid free, temperature and humidity controlled listening room. They have been used with the finest components, $100,000 Lloyd Walker Black Diamond V turntable, Lamm M2.2 power amps, Audio Research Reference 2SE Phono stage, Aesthetix Callisto Line Stage, Grant Audio CD 100, mostly Synergistic Research cables and tweaks, the lists goes on.

The only reason this very special one owner pair of speakers is on the market at all is because Sunny Umrao from Scaena loudspeakers called me up with an incredible opportunity. He called me on a Friday night when I happened to be sick as a dog in a hotel somewhere and he said that Harry Pearson’s reference pair of Scaenas that he had been using in his reference system for the last 8 years (a record I believe for the longevity of a review pair of speakers) might be available if and only if I had a buyer who could jump on them within hours!

Sunny knew I had a customer who had this huge Genesis system and who was interested in trying the Scaenas in his listening room. Sunny understood that someone who has had a system on the scale of this Genesis system would need a really BIG Scaena system and that even the "standard" Scaena 3.2 system that is about 6 feet tall and runs about $75,000 retail might not satisfy a customer who is used to a pair of 6-foot tall bass columns like the Genesis 201’s. What that customer really needs is the Scaena "Tri-Fecta" woofer system consisting of 2 stacks of 3-18" subwoofers. But those woofers cost $50,000 alone without any speakers.

I’ve talked to a lot of manufacturers and a lot of them are just really big on their own products and have not really bothered to listen to or study the products of other designers. I was so impressed with Sunny because he knew about the Genesis 201 system my customer had in intimate detail without ever having visited this customer. He knew the strengths and the weaknesses and he knew how great a loudspeaker would have to be to make this customer happy. Most speaker manufacturers would just say "Well Stef of course our brand new plutonium coated XYZ tweeters with our ultra long throw 4 ton magnets are going to sound better, I mean, it’s a $165,000 speaker system, OK, don’t worry?" I really care about my customers and I don’t just want to sell them something and count their money. I want to sell something if and only if that something will bring the customer lasting pleasure and be a valuable upgrade over what he or she already has. Valuable for me does not mean that it looks fancy or that it puts money in a manufacturer’s pocket. It means that the customer loves it and enjoys his or her music more with it than without it. So I was really thrilled that Sunny knew so much about these Genesis 201’s and that he understood as I did that not very many modern loudspeakers would actually sound as good as these Genesis 201’s did. Sunny understood it would be very easy to sell this customer something newer and more costly that did not sound better than what he had. Luckily, the top of the line Scaenas at Harry Pearson’s were a good enough speaker to replace the Genesis with. And on top of that he offered to come and help me set the Scaenas up for the customer if I could help sell them in a short time so as to clear space for Harry Pearson to review the new Nola’s for his friend Carl Marchisotto.

Well, I jumped at the chance and my customer knew a good thing when he heard about it and the rest as they say is history. Not only did my customer get to buy Harry Pearson’s reference system with which he has conducted countless reviews over the last years, he actually opted to go even one step better and to have the speakers shipped from Harry’s listening room on Long Island to the Scaena factory where they were upgraded from the original "Founder’s Series" planar ribbon tweeters to the Raven Alize tweeter option.

The Raven Alize are the most delicate and exquisite ribbon tweeters in existence and they are quite expensive, adding substantial cost to a Scaena system. Any Scaena system can always be upgraded and up sized to accommodate any new features Scaena develops, that is one of their guarantees to customers.

And so that is why these Genesis speakers are for sale. And I hope you will forgive me taking the time to describe the Scaenas. I want you to understand this is a man who loves his music. It’s his retreat from whatever stress life affords. He has his own little building in the backyard, that’s where the pictures here were taken. And he goes in and puts on a record and listens to the music. We spent days with him listening to, testing, photographing and preparing to pack these speakers. The care and the time he took with us were just incredible. You know, customers who can afford a new $165,000 Scaena system are very successful, very busy. They tend in my experience to rush things and often they will dent or damage their gear because they are in a hurry and their time is so valuable. But not this gentleman. At every step of the way he was so careful, so thoughtful. This was the first job I had brought my 13 year old son out on, to help me with the work as I have a hurt back and my son is learning my trade. And this was the perfect job to bring him on. This client, wow, what a great guy, just fantastic. Down to earth, caring, considerate in every way. He had even drawn little circles with a Sharpie around each screw hole on the Genesis crates to make it easier to find the screw holes and assemble the crates. The care he took with us and his gear gave my son the awareness that successful people can be much more then the items they own.

I don’t believe that you could possibly find a Genesis 201 system that has been cared for like this one has. I care for gear pretty well, and it hurts me to say this, but honestly I do not think I could have kept these as flawless as he did if these had been mine. I kept expecting we would find some flaw, but I just couldn’t. And the quality of the wood that Genesis used is absolutely superb. My wife is the photographer and she has a great eye for flaws and I said to her we have to be able to find some flaw because people wont believe speakers this big don’t have them. And finally she noticed a place that is highlighted below where you can see the joint between two surfaces is a tiny bit wider at the top. That’s not damage from handling or abuse obviously, that’s how they were made. There is also a place on the back of one of the woofer towers that is a little scuffed. She also found while photographing the accessories that there was a tiny nick on the bottom of the remote. You can find photos of these in the pictures below. That’s really it, these are so gorgeous and expertly cared for.

This system comes with the servo amp for the bass towers. So that saves you money, you don’t need to purchase an amp to drive the woofers. And we have the cables from the servo amp to the woofer towers, special 30 foot cables made for Genesis by AudioQuest, we’ll include those also. So you get cables too, again, that saves you some money. You will need a power amp or power amps to drive the Midrange/Tweeter columns of course and I would be happy to consult on that if you like. My client tried many things and the very best was the Lamm amps you see pictured.

Also, if you buy the speakers for the asking price of $24,000 plus freight and you pay by cashier’s check or bank wire (to save me the cost of PayPal fees, etc.) then I will throw in some very special extras as a "cash bonus." I will throw in 4 additional brand new spare servo woofers (valued at $1,000) for you to have spares on hand in case you ever needed one. None have ever gone out on this system and the system has never been abused so I don’t think you will need them, but they give you some extra piece of mind to have spares in stock. And I will also throw in a matched set of the BG Radia tweeters purchased from Genesis for these speakers. You can buy these tweeters direct from BG Radia for about $2,000 I believe, but a matched set from Genesis costs more and is to be preferred of course if you can get it. These are brand new in the boxes, opened only to check that no damage occurred in transit and if this wonderful system is purchased for the asking price and paid for in cash equivalent then all these valuable extras will be included at no charge other than the nominal extra cost of freight and insurance.

Because these speakers are sold on consignment I am generally not looking to take trade-ins for them. Taking a trade in would be complicated by the fact that I need to give my client cash for these speakers, he has already paid cash for the Scaenas. So I will probably only take a trade-in if you make me one of those insane offers that is such a deal I just can’t refuse it. That said, if you have speakers or other gear you wish you could trade in, send me an email. Maybe I can help you sell your gear. Perhaps we can achieve the same outcome via a different route. I am happy to help my customers sell their high-quality gear.

I think the price on these speakers is already really low, it’s more than 65% off even before accounting for extras or inflation. And I have tremendous respect for this customer. I am not going to go to him with lowball offers and sad stories about how someone lost his job but just really, really has to have this 4 tower reference speaker system to listen to in the shelter. Our audio hobby that we love is a luxury. The truth is that that for all but perhaps 1,000 of the wealthiest individuals in the world there is always going to be something we see that we have some level of interest in or desire for that does not meet our budget. This does not mean we are not successful or that we cannot enjoy our hobby to the fullest. Far from it. I sincerely believe that people of all budgets can find a way to have wonderful music in our homes. And of course, sites like Audiogon have helped to make this even more affordable and accessible for many of us. So if you would like to have these but you can’t afford them right now I wish you a very, very successful 2014 and I hope that the next time you see a system like this you can grab it. For those who are very close to the asking price, go ahead and make an offer and we’ll see if we can work something out. I won’t respond to lowballs at all and I certainly won’t show them to Terry. But if you’re close and you really do want them, go ahead and give it a shot.

As I go to list these I see a pair of the Genesis system where they have the 2 Midrange and Tweeter columns like these but no bass towers, instead they have a small woofer cabinet appended to the back of the tweeter columns. I forget what that model was designated and the ad does not say either. That system costs about half as much new as what we are offering. And it’s offered by a zero feedback seller at $22,800. So for just an extra thousand bucks you get 2 gigantic extra bass towers from an established seller with over 10 years of perfect feedback on Audiogon and Ebay, not to mention the spares if you pay cash.

I think most sellers would list these as a 9/10 or even a 10/10 due to the speakers being flawless but we never list anything as 10/10 unless it is new in box and I like to be conservative in my ratings so I am going to give these an 8 for age only.

The following details are about "The Servo-bass Advantage " and was taken from their brochure. Please enjoy reading about these advantages or skip to the next section that details the shipping of this system, perhaps to your home.
"Very few loudspeakers use servo drive, either because most designers think that it is too difficult to design, too expensive, or because of the extraordinary demands a servo system makes on the amplifier and the transducer. The history of the Genesis servosystem started from the first introduced in the legendary Infinity Servo Statik One in 1968(!) - so we know how to design and build servo systems. The technology has been constantly updated and refined over the past almost 40 years! The concept of our servo bass system is an easy one to understand: It employs an accelerometer as a sensor to constantly monitor the movement of the woofer cone and continuously compares it to the input signal. This comparison circuit instantly identifies any deviation from the input and applies a corrective signal to compensate for any deviation, resulting in the virtual elimination of the inherent distortion of the woofer.

As an example, when you have a high-impact, low-bass signal that starts and stops suddenly (for example a tympani), the inertia of the woofer cone makes it slow to start moving, and then after it has started moving, the momentum of the cone makes it continue to move after the signal has stopped. The sonic result is softness, overhang, and bloat in the bass. This results in a perceived lack of tautness and definition, and a blurring of dynamic impact. With the servo system, the circuit senses that the woofer is not moving as fast as it should, and it instantaneously applies much more current to make it move faster. When the signal stops, it predicts that the woofer will continue to move when it shouldn’t be moving and applies a counter-signal to stop the woofer faster and more effectively than an open loop woofer could possibly respond.
Thus, the servo-drive reduces distortion and improves transient response by making the woofer seem massless. Typical non-servo woofer systems have distortion levels that exceed 10% at even moderate levels. The Genesis servo bass system reduces this distortion to below one percent at almost any output level. The system also drives the woofer to constant acceleration, which makes the frequency response of the woofer anechoically flat to the lowest frequencies. "

We can ship these anywhere in the world, 4 wooden crates plus a couple of boxes, shipping weight of a little over 2,000 pounds we think. We don’t have an exact way to weigh them in the crates. They were marked as 2,300 pounds when they came from Genesis so that is most likely right. This could be the dimensional weight. We have done are best to receive accurate freight quotes and if they wind up weighing less than that and I can ship for less because of it, I will refund the buyer the difference.
We will ship this system fully insured, and the quotes below reflect the big discounts on freight that we receive and have passed on to you. We pulled quotes for both UPS-SCS and FedEx and found UPS-SCS to be anywhere from 200-1000 dollars less. And then, just for kicks we ran a quote for standard UPS without an account and it was just shy of being 3 times as much as the UPS-SCS quotes! We know that we appreciate getting freight discounts and we are happy to pass them on to you. If you are sincerely interested in purchasing this system and would like us to pull a freight quote specific to your needs, please email us at [email protected] and we will get you the best estimate possible. Here are a few locations and their estimated shipping costs. The transportation time is estimated to be a week to 10 days depending on your location. It takes a fair bit of work to get a freight quote so we don’t want to do them for people who are just slightly interested in the speakers. What we’re looking for is are you ready to buy the speakers if we can get you a good deal on freight and if so then we’d like to get you a quote.

San Francisco, CA $1,700
Miami, Florida $1,400
New York, New York $2,200
Seattle, Washington $1,800
Hong Kong Air $2,200
Hong Kong Ocean $1,950

Since this is a consignment sale where the speakers do not belong to me but to my customer I need to ask that the buyer promptly inspect and test the speakers upon receipt and report any problems found so that if there is a problem found I could withhold funds from paying my customer to deal with the problem. I don’t think there will be any problem, but once I have paid him I won’t have any recourse if any other problem is found. So, please take the time to unpack and enjoy your new speakers as soon after they arrive as possible. We look forward to receiving your email saying how much these enhance your listening experience. We once had a good doctor in Australia buy a pair of Wilsons which we air freighted him promptly. Six months later he let us know that crucial hardware was missing from the box. It turned out that he had been busy and just never opened the crates for 5 1/2 months after the speakers arrived at his residence. Well, I understand of course that people get busy, it happens to all of us. But definitely within 10 days of receipt at the very latest these must be checked and any discrepancy emailed to us. We suggest that you purchase some libations and invite some music loving friends to help you unpack and hook up your speakers first and then enjoy music and a drink responsibly after.

Thank you for visiting this listing, we hope that enjoyed the tale of how wonderful these speakers are and how they can become yours. If you want more, then please do enjoy a few more pictures as well as detailed specifications about this Genesis system below.

We are truly appreciative of responsible Audiogon members, please make sure you are one of them before you make us an offer or hit "buy it now." If you have questions concerning the gear or the terms of sale, please email us at [email protected] to insure that we get your message. We will be happy to get back with you as quickly as possible to discuss the shipping details or anything regarding your home cinema needs. Thank you for your interest and may our gear help facilitate your ears meeting high quality sound with ease.

"Genesis Advanced Technologies is a leading developer of high-end audiophile loudspeaker systems with a commitment to absolute fidelity in product, service and performance. Featuring elegant designs, exquisite finishes and proven technology developed, evolved and refined over the past forty years, Genesis loudspeakers are world renowned for their musicality. With exemplary speed and dynamics, harmonic neutrality, and accurate and extended bass, Genesis loudspeakers are the worlds best. "

"The Genesis 201 is a floor standing, four-piece loudspeaker system featuring a pair of dipole midrange/tweeter panels and two bi-polar woofer towers. The midrange and tweeter sections are dipolar, meaning that the sound radiates from the front and the back in a "push pull" fashion, while the servo woofers produce a bipolar pattern, meaning that the sound radiates from both front and back in a circular manner. Dipoles are optimum for both room placement and superior imaging, while bipoles are better than monopoles or dipoles for low frequency response. This unique incorporation of the two technologies permits the Genesis to take advantage of the strengths of each.

Each midrange/tweeter panel consists of a 48- inch midrange ribbons manufactured by BG Corp, twelve front-firing and three rear-firing 1-inch planar ribbon tweeters. The 1-inch planar ribbon tweeter, described by the audiophile press as possibly "the world’s best, " is hand-crafted from an 0.0005 inch thick laminated membrane of aluminum and Kapton. The extremely low mass of the tweeter’s diaphragm means that this driver has a frequency response considerably beyond the human hearing range.

Genesis 201’s midrange transducer is singlepiece, planar ribbon driver constructed of a very thin layer of aluminum laminated to a 0.001 inch thick Mylar substrate and surrounded by over 24 feet of barium ferrite magnets.

Each woofer tower contains 8 eight inch poly-kevlar / aluminum servo woofers, 4 in the front and 4 in the rear. The woofer system is powered by a 1500 watt, discrete, remote controlled servo power amplifier. The highly-advanced remote allows adjustments for both amplitude and phase response characteristics."

Here is the scuff on the back of one of the Bass Towers.

And here are the tops of the Mid Range towers, if you really want to see it, you can notice a small widening of the seam where the sides meet.

Another barely noticeable blem is on the bottom of the remote pictured here.

The Fine Print:

Our items are guaranteed to work properly and be in the condition we describe. If we make a mistake, if an item does not work properly, or if the item description is inaccurate, we’ll offer you a full and prompt refund or exchange and issue return shipping labels at our expense.

Returns due to reasons other than some deficiency on our part are subject to a 20% restocking fee. This includes sales where the buyer "changes his mind" , where his wife beats him over the head for spending too much money, where some unforeseen crisis, financial or otherwise, strikes the buyer, his family, his friends/business/job/pets/favorite sports team/etc. or any other reason that the buyer may seek to cancel the sale or return the item for some reason other than a mistake or discrepancy on High End Zone’s part. And this includes cases where the buyer changes his mind and wants to cancel the sale before he even receives the item, possibly before we even ship it. We are a small company and the moment a buyer commits to purchase one of our items we are redeploying our capital to get other items for our customers to buy. If you decide 2 hours after you buy something that you don’t want it anymore, chances are we’ve already spent the money to restock. So the restocking fee absolutely applies in all cases of buyers changing their minds, wanting to cancel a sale after it is agreed or returning an item for any reason other than High End Zone providing a flawed or incorrect item.

We can sometimes make an exception if you change your mind in order to buy something else that we can sell you, generally a higher model. For example, If you make a deal to buy a JL f113 from us and then you decide that what you REALLY want is a Gotham g213, then we can probably work it out to make that switch for you without a restocking fee. That said, please don’t buy if you’re not sure that you want the item you are buying. If you need to check with your wife, your broker, your business partner, your kids, or the Supreme Court before you buy, please do that. High End Zone cannot be held responsible for any case of wives beating their husbands for spending too much money on good gear.

Please check your purchases promptly upon arrival. A client purchased speakers from us and didn’t open them for 6 months, then found that some parts were missing. We are doing our best to get those parts for him at no charge from the manufacturer but it would have been a LOT easier if he’d examined them upon receipt. In general, our policy is that any flaw, damage, missing item, incorrect item, etc. must be reported to High End Zone by email no later than 3 days (72 hours) after that item is delivered. If you are not able to check the item yourself in that time frame, please make the necessary arrangements to have someone else make such a check for you in your absence.

High End Zone is a full service home theater dealer located in Southwest New Mexico. While we are well established as the premier dealer in our small town market, we also serve many clients who have multiple homes or live in far-flung places. The world is increasingly a small place and I delight in talking with and serving clients from all continents and many countries of the world. Depending on your needs we are happy to just sell you gear (note some manufacturers may prohibit us from sending gear to certain places) or we can provide a full service experience including system design, acoustic design and construction, installation, programming, and more. We’ve done work for very high profile clients with multiple homes and we are also proud to serve many hobbyists who enjoy this hobby on a modest budget. No matter your budget, we’ll strive to provide the products you want at a price that is fair with top shelf service.

*List includes lines we are factory direct with as well as lines we get through distribution or through our extensive dealer network. Most customers don’t care whether we are factory direct if we provide authentic product and great service at a fair price, but if you care about this or any other issue, please ask us.

Unlike most shops that sell a very small number of lines that they are authorized for and will always try and talk customers in to buying just those few lines, we are willing to sell you virtually any line that you want. Obviously we make a lower profit if we have to get it from another dealer, but our goal is to provide you, the customer, with one stop shopping and top notch service. It’s more like the business model of Amazon than the old school brick and mortar stores. We want the customer’s business and we will try and earn it by providing competitive pricing and top notch service for you on whatever brands you want. Of course if you are not sure what brands are best for your needs and want us to provide expert analysis of what gear represents the best value for your dollar, we are more than happy to provide that too. We spend a great deal of time and money listening to and viewing a wide range of audio and video systems, as well as bringing in gear for long-term testing in our facilities. Most of the salesmen you might deal with in a home theater store do NOT have a high-end audio video system in their homes. I have 4 such systems, including Runcos in every nook and cranny, and I live with this stuff daily. So I truly know what works well and what is worth spending money on and what is not. And even if I used something for years and loved it, when I hear something better, that is a better value, I switch immediately. My main loyalty is to the customer and your satisfaction--I want you to buy not just one thing from us, but all your gear, for life, and to recommend us to your friends and family. To that end, I will strive to give you the best and most honest advice, fair prices and great service. And I’ll try to get you any brand you want, ultimately your system needs to satisfy you, not me.

Our clients certainly enjoy their home theaters. We do as well and hope you’ll also take pleasure and be inspired by the variety of these beautiful installations.

A picture is certainly worth a thousand words but some aspects of making an informed choice in a home theater system are worth a little extra effort.
We invite you to contact the High End Zone for help in making your choices.
