The Review in the Feb 2011 Absolute Sound is a rave. They sum up with:
"After my time with the DAC-2 I can't help but be impressed with it. Wyred 4 Sound has combined a rich feature set with remarkable performance at a price that makes it hard to beat. While I haven't heard every DAC (who has?), I have yet to hear any USB DACs under $1500 that I like better, and I doubt that you will either, at least for the time being. Factor in the DAC-2's current 192kHz high-resolution capabilities and built-in circuit-board upgradability, and you have a DAC that will remain au courant long enough to make it a savvy and satisfying purchase, regardless of how much more you can afford to spend."

The first review was in 6moons.com and it was exceptional. They gave it a Blue Moon award and said:
"The value assessment of this assignment has progressed to a predictable conclusion. Being so close in performance to an established $5,000 benchmark, the Weiss Minerva won UltraAudio's Select Component distinction and a Blue Moon award from us and bundling greater functionality for just $1,500 doesn't, in this context, make Wyred's DAC2 an actual giant killer. It does very much make it a killer value in high-performance digital however."

Reviewers at Stereotimes and Positive Feedback both bought the DAC
Stereotimes summed up their review with:
"In conclusion, when you have a component with so many worthwhile consumer-friendly features that provides such exemplary musical performance and at the same time lets you hear every breath and nuance of sound no matter how slight, well, in my book that's something to get truly excited about. When you see the price sticker reads only $1499, as they say, that's the icing on one very delicious cake. I'm buying the review sample because at this point I couldn't bear to part with it."
Positive feedback said:
"I don't know what kind of filtering the W4S DAC-2 uses but, as Goldilocks said, "It's just right". Like I said, I'm buying the demo."
The new Wyred 4 Sound balanced DAC-2 DAC/Preamp with 24 bit /192k Asynchronous USB input is now shipping. I have about 150 in the field and User feedback has been exceptional on this amazingly Hot DAC.
Available in 220/240 volt/50Hz for International sales in countries without a distributor.
The DAC-2 is a 32 bit multi input DAC/Preamp with 24 bit/192K Asynchronous USB input that sets new standards in its price range. It has a total of 7 inputs. It is only sold Internet Direct and would be priced at $3000.00 if we used dealers.
The DAC2 is built around the state of the art ESS 9018 Sabre DAC chip. This chip is an 8 channel DAC that is run dual mono double dual differential to output two balanced channels of audio with almost non existent jitter. It is considered by many to be the finest DAC chip made, at any price. It uses 500kHz oversampling.
The output stage uses a 35 amp Schottky bridged rectified power supply and has 88,000uf of filter caps Wyred 4 Sound low ESR "super-cap" (same as used in the STP-SE). This is more than many amps. It is a fully balanced design with balanced and single ended outputs. It uses an over sized toroidal transformer and has 2 coaxial, 2 optical, AES/EBU and I2S over HDMI inputs to work with the superb PS Audio Perfect Wave Transport.
This new DAC2 is an upgrade to the DAC-1 and adds the following:
*24-bit/192kHz Asynchronous USB input
*Robust 35A Schottky bridge rectifiers (same as used in the STP-SE)
*88,000uF of filtering with Wyred 4 Sound low ESR "super caps" (same as used in the STP-SE)
*upgraded VFD display for input, sample rate, volume control, and configuration viewing
*Remote controlled preamp capability
*Defeatable - 32 bit volume control
*HT Bypass inputs (selectable via DC trigger)
*1x AES/EBU input
*1x Balanced I2S input via HDMI cable (not standard HDMI cable format)
* Proprietary drivers for 32/64 bit Windows XP, 7 and Mac OS 10.4, 10.5 ,10.6
Features common to both the DAC 1 and DAC 2 are:
* ESS 9018 Sabre32 Reference DAC (32-bit DAC)
* Wyred 4 Sound proprietary discrete output stages for optimum sonics
* ESS Time Domain Jitter Eliminator®
* Upgradable Digital, output, and USB boards (designed for future improvements)
* Automatic 500kHz oversampling for precise output filtering
* Fully balanced design with balanced and unbalanced outputs
* Over sized toroidal transformer
* 2x Coax inputs
* 2x Toslink inputs
* 115/230v switchable mains
*Compact size (8.5"W x 4.125"H x 13.5"D)
The new DAC-2 is the best under $3k DAC that we have ever heard.
Why pay more for a USB only DAC from others just because it has 24/96K Asynchronous USB (Ayre) when here you can get a world class full multi input DAC with Asynchronous 192k USB capability for far less.
Made in California with a 3-Year factory warranty.
