One
of the greatest values in audio, the Conductor Virtuoso is a USB DAC,
Headphone Amp and Preamplifier. The Virtuoso is the first Burson product
to include remote control, which makes it finally ideal for integration
with a 2-channel audio system. 

Most
headphone enthusiasts use its DAC and amplifier to drive their prized
headphones with one beautifully-built, modestly-priced component that
has become a legend with Head-Fi guys. With over 4 watts of power on tap
the Conductor Virtuoso will drive any headphone with ease. Or you can
use the Conductor Virtuoso’s preamp functions to make it the center of a
headphone and speaker-based desktop system with headphone option.  The
Burson Timekeeper amplifier offers extensive flexibility with all kinds
of speakers and when paired with the Virtuoso you get the 2-channel
system synergy that Burson intended.

Burson
has significantly upgraded and refined the Conductor circuit with this
version. There are now a stunning 100-steps of volume control with a
new, easy-to-read display. When the Conductor Virtuoso is on the volume
indicators appear on the face of the thick, antiresonant aluminium front
plate. As always, Burson eschews densely-packed
opamps and designs all discrete circuitry for superior tonality, clarity
and a lower noise floor.

You
can choose from two interchangeable DAC boards, the Sabre or Burr Brown, each with different sonic
characteristics (see the descriptions below) and the modular design
makes for no-fuss upgrades. Buy both boards and pop them in and out when you feel the mood.

DAC Board Options

ESS SABRE32

One
of the Conductor Virtuoso’s two optional boards had to be the best DAC
chip on the market regardless of cost. Right now the best is the ESS
SABRE32 DAC with 32-bit Hyper-stream architecture and Time Domain Jitter
Elimination technology. Custom Burson circuitry pushes the SABRE32 to
its limits and raises the bar for transparent and refined sound. A new
FET (Field Effect Transistor) output stage delivers the full potential
the SABRE32 is capable of. The 9018 DAC’s output stage is vibrant,
dynamic and open with only 20 carefully-selected and matched components
in the signal path.

We
consider the 9018 as the ultimate DAC board for the Conductor Virtuoso,
and it makes a well-defined and logical upgrade for any Conductor
equipped with the excellent Burr Brown PCM1793 DAC.

Sonic
characteristics include greater resolution, better top-end extension
and openness, greater bottom-end weight and control, and explosive
dynamics with a clarity and transparency that will weld your bottom end
to the listening chair.

Burr Brown PCM1793

Burson
has worked with the Burr Brown PCM1793 DAC chip for over six years.
It’s available as an alternative to the ESS SABRE32 DAC in the Conductor
Virtuoso. We’ve
always felt the 1793 was an underrated chip so we developed a new FET
input stage with very few components in the signal path. As a result the
sound is irresistibly transparent and musical. The 1793 has the classic
Burr Brown sound; it’s warm, engaging, relaxing, full of texture and a
bit analog sounding without the ultimate resolution of the Sabre 9018.

Cleaner Power Means Higher Resolution

Ever
notice how your system sounds better in the evening or weekends? When
AC power is generated it’s fairly clean, but every device between you
and the station draws current that corrupts the waveform. Air
conditioners pull down and send spikes through the AC line, and
chargers’ capacitors nibble at the incoming AC only at the top and
bottom of the alternating 60Hz waveform causing a rippling effect that
creates distortion. Outdoor high-voltage cables pick up radio signals
from multiple sources causing distortion. Transformers on the national
grid are running close to saturation creating even more distortion!

It
doesn’t end there. The power supplies from most audio equipment pollute
the powerline, the ground, and radiate high-frequency interference.
Standard IC voltage regulators inject noise because of the nature of
their operation, hiding details in the music.

The Burson Solution

Burson’s
new Musician Series takes the already improved IC-free power supply of
our first generation Classic Series to the next level. It’s now built
around a noise-filtering network employing twice as many filtering
stages as the previous design for even greater noise rejection. The new
power supply is fed by new custom-built low-noise transformers that
deliver clean and stable power resulting in greater 3D imaging emerging
from a pitch-black background.
