All digital information gets reclocked in the 300D v2 to make jitter “go away” and create a feeling of great precision and rhythmic stability to its presentation.

Up-sampling is the icing on the cake.

CDs and many other digital sources are normally sampled at 44.1kHz. In other words, the wave partially reconstructed 44,100 times a second. It has been proven, at least in theory, that that is a sufficiently high frequency to get all the information there is off of normal CDs. I do believe this is true.

That does not mean, however, that we are in the clear!

This “clock frequency” of 44.1kHz creates a huge noise output at 44.1kHz which, if not filtered, could create problems with your amp and speakers. For this reason, all CD players filter this frequency out.

Building a filter that can keep all the music up to 20,000Hz and completely eliminate 44,100Hz is a real challenge, since these frequencies are only about an octave apart.

Many DACs and CD players filter this with analog circuits.

A conventional analog filter (first order) would only filter the noise by 6dB…not nearly enough. So most players use many, many stages of these filters to reduce the noise to the required -100dB point. These filters, however, “ring”.

This means that at certain frequencies, they keep outputting after the note has stopped. This is why many audiophiles hated early CD players…they “rang” in their filters.

Many other DACs and the DACs in most CD players use digital filters. These do a GREAT job of filtering out the clock noise, but they “pre-ring”. Believe it or not, they cause the note to start up ringing, then decay ringing again.

That’s even worse!

Up-sampling makes all this go away. The clock (sampling) frequency is moved up in frequency to many times the frequency it was.

That does NOT mean that you get many times more information from the disc. In fact, you get the same amount.

If you know the weather report is updated on every hour, and you are so into the weather you listen every hour, would you get a more accurate report if you tuned in eight times an hour? NO!

So why have the clock work at 8x speed?

Because now the clock noise frequency is way out at eight times the frequency of the highest frequency music.

It is now so well separated from the music frequencies that we can design a filter that gets rid of 99.99% of the noise and keeps 99.99% of the music, all using simple filters that are much less prone to ringing.

And it works!

The result of all this is a smooth sound, a more detailed sound, a sound with greater depth of field, but, most of all, a sound that is free of the “grain” or “hash” that analog lovers hate about CDs.

The best part is that it makes all your regular CDs and other digital sources that you already own sound better.

In the case of the 300Dv2, distortion is reduced to .001 and the noise is suppressed by 115dB!

The power supply has 8 stages of regulation, too0, to make sure that the DAC receives the purest power.

A line conditioner will NOT be necessary to use with the 300D to get great performance.
