The Ear "Its noise floor is unbelievably low. No discernible hiss at any volume
level is something to be proud of. No shrill highs either – unless that
is how they are on the recording. It seems to capture very faithfully
the essence of the recording and portray it in a very accessible way.
There’s no obvious rose-tinted presentation, but nor is it clinically
clean. It is very open, transparent and seemingly very fast. Deep bass
is particularly well reproduced, being both deft and agile but not
without weight when appropriate. The top end is open, and nicely lit; it
has ‘sparkle’ without being bright, but there’s no detail loss either.
"

"This DAC is not harsh or ruthless, but reflects the source with an
honesty and integrity that is, at times, surprising. In a sense the
surprise (this being a new product from a new company) was that there
was no surprise. It was a case of ‘plug it in and enjoy the music’.
Nothing more, and definitely nothing less. But THE MORE YOU LISTEN, THE HARDER IT IS TO TURN IT OFF.

: "The guitarist’s mostly acoustic performance enhanced with synclavier
pieces came to us full of flavour and richness. The sound was vivid and
offered up a deep aural vision on the settings the producer hade made
of the recordings.
Truly stunning was the rendition of the 24bit/176.4kHz
recording of Sera Una Noche La Segunda on M.A. Recordings.
This is a very airy reading captured with just two microphones. Its
dynamic range is really rare these days and the musical style of early
tango ideally suited. All kind of rhythms pass by, from African milonga
to vals criollo and Argentine baguala. Next to a wide spectrum of
rhythms, the instruments cover just as wide a musical range. Voice,
bass clarinet, guitar and cello are augmented by higher-spectrum
instruments like flute, harmonica and percussion. The DAC212 locked on
to the higher bit rate without issue and just as all incoming PCM
material, oversampled the input to 1.5MHz before further processing. As
we played more hi-res PCM material—DSD was still a work in progress—we
became more and more fond of the DAC212’s ‘sound’
."
"Speaking of sound might suggest that the DAC212 had a
sound of its own. But that wasn’t the case. The resultant sound was
neither analytical nor bright, neither too heavy in the bass nor too
transparent. It certainly was full and detailed but mostly, it was very
well balanced. That any noise which might have been incoming or was
internally produced was properly handled was proven by playing dynamic
content at low to very low volume settings
."

Remusic: "
No color, no own musical signature, no feeling of artificiality in the sound, no listening fatigue: only music that flows in a very natural and spontaneous way. Very detailed, balanced, satisfying without exaggeration, easily found in other achievements."

"
Listening fatigue and distortion are nonexistent."

Head-Fi: "
To my ears, the DAC212 absolutely nails that ideal source component
task, and it does it without imparting any harshness or extended
listening fatigue. Whatever the music calls for, it's there in spades,
with no perceptible sonic weaknesses nor flavour of it's own.

"
I really could go on through 50 more tracks but I think you're getting the idea by now. To summarise the overall sound from the DAC212, to my ears it is extremely resolving & detailed, with excellent imaging, an inky-black noise floor (don't be afraid to use IEMs on this one) and a transparent, neutral, balanced tone (perhaps better expressed as no tone at all). If I'm nit-picking, some might describe the sound as a tad dry, but frankly I feel that's essentially what you're getting with a highly transparent & neutral source.  Tonal "character" can be added further up the signal chain if desired.  Forget what you may have read (or heard) of Sabre DACs - I'm not hearing any digital glare or harshness and no sibilance that isn't in the source material.  I've been deliberating over using the term "analogue".  I can't say for sure that this sounds like pure analogue...I never owned an analogue system with such high resolution.  What I do know is the DAC212 communicates emotion to me in my system, more so than any other DAC I've used. I put this down to "leaving nothing out", and allowing the true dynamics of the recording to flow. "Analogue" or no, that works for me. "

Customer testimonials:
"Holy shit!!
This dac is beautiful, I'm sat here listening to some vocal acoustic music and the liquidity of it is completely captivating!I am so in the zone, I can't turn the music off and I had other things to do today lol!Thank you for this beautiful beast!"

"The DAC212 is beautifully constructed and packaged. It conveys enormous pride of ownership holding and admiring it's aesthetic qualities. My initial impressions are that sonically it has no discernible signature and is astonishingly neutral, but I will investigate this in greater detail over the next few days and report back with my findings."

"...whilst I appreciate the engaging quality of the headphone out from the TT, to my ears it does not match the DAC212 for resolution, transparency nor aesthetics (actually I have a catalogue of aesthetics issues for the TT).
Personally what I want from a DAC is absolute clarity and neutrality but without harshness. The DAC212 provides this in spades. If I want to colour the sound I'll do that with an amp or headphones/speakers."
