These performances are a faithful record of of Adrian Boult's view of Elgar in the 1950s. But they are not his last word or his only word on the subject. As he grew older,certain features became freer, more 'elastic', to use Elgar's word. What remained constant and respect and dedication, illuminated by genuine love and understanding expressed in terms of the highest artistic integrity-and modesty.
As he wrote to Elgar in 1932, after the BBC festival, 'I wish we could start over again, and I would try and do better justice to my part of it'. Yet it was of those performances that the critic Richard Capell wrote that the works Boult conducted 'in respect of tone quality have never in all these years of countless performances sounded more beautiful.
