""NiccolÚ Paganini (1782-1840) was an Italian violinist and composer, regarded in his time as the greatest violinist in the world. His international career began with his first tour of Europe in 1825; between then and 1834, he dazzled audiences with his unprecedented technical prowess. As a composer of violin concertos and chamber works for violin and guitar, Paganini had success, though his music is primarily designed for virtuosity, and to a lesser degree for expression. Perhaps his best-known piece is the Caprice No. 24, the subject of many composers' sets of variations, including Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini." - AMG
