Audiophile #121: 18 more Classical LP Gems,TAS, RCA, EMI, Decca!

These were owned by an Audiophile who took pleasure in collecting Concertos, Tone Poems, and solo works, along with a handful of Symphonies. There’s a TAS Superdisc Title in this group, as well as a group of RCA “Plum Label” Victrolas in Like-New condition, as well as the highly desirable Denon test record. These are mostly crisp, clean copies and nearly everything here is Analog (1 Digital), with superb to outstanding reputations. There are 17 titles and 18 LPs.

Some of the highlights:

--Chopin “Piano Concerto #1”, w/Paul Graffman on Piano, and Charles Munch with Boston Symphony Orchestra, in a totally classic RCA recording ; this is the “Plum Label” Victrola in crisp, clean, like-new condition. This is 1 of 6 Victrola titles in this collection.

--Vaughan Williams “Job”, w/Sir Adrian Boult and The London Symphony Orchestra, in a totally stunning recording, which is why this is a TAS Superdisc Title. Enough said!

--Beethoven “Moonlight Sonata”, w/Wilhelm Kempff on Piano, in what many think (myself included) is the most spiritually sublime performance ever put on vinyl. This is the deluxe DG German pressing, and comes in a gatefold jacket along with an illustrated catalog of other Kempff titles. A most beautiful package.

-- “Denon Technical Test Record”!!! A very desirable title, this is the Japanese pressing.

--Britten “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”, w/Benjamin Britten and The London Symphony Orchestra in a totally stunning and classic Decca recording from the early 1960’s. The jacket is in fair condition, but the LP is Near Mint, and this is an original Decca “FFSS” Grooved pressing, cut and pressed using tube equipment. Glorious sound!

And the stuff I didn’t write about is just as wonderful; these are solid titles with world-class sound covering a variety of styles and periods. Decca, EMI, RCA, Angel, DG, and quality pressings from the UK, Japan, Germany, and USA; everything here received 3 stars in The Penguin Stereo Record Guide. I have photographed the spines to give you a very clear idea of what’s here.
