Essence of Music Optical Audio-Video Disc Treatment is an essential product for preparing your CD and Blu-ray discs for upload and playback.  Ripping following Essence of Music application retrieves and permanently captures visceral details, spatial cues, and ambient intimacies of a live event to your media server - delicacies always present, but obscured within your disc, prior to Essence of Music application.

How does Essence of Music improve the performance of a media disc?

Essence of Music Optical Digital Audio-Video Disc Treatment improves the polycarbonate disc surface.  Essence of Music Treatment targets frozen in stresses  on the polycarbonate disc surface incorporated during the cooling phase of disc manufacturing.

What is birefringence and why is it a potential source of musical degradation?

Birefringence (double refraction) occurs when the light transmitted through a medium takes two separate paths.  In media discs it is caused by residual stresses introduced during the disc's manufacturing process (i.e. transient cooling stresses; transient thermal stresses).  When a single laser beam enters the stressed areas within the polycarbonate resin surface, it splits (bi-refracted) into two beams due to the well-documented birefringent physical property of stressed polycarbonate plastic resin.  The two beams then arrive at slightly different times to each pit and bump within the disc's encoded data layer.  Bi-refraction is repeated again when the beam (now beams) exits the disc as one to four beams per each pit or bump - all originating from the original single laser source beam.  The now corrupted data, carries countless bit-read errors  to the player's optical pick-up at different speeds, time, and phase, resulting in optical phase anomalies, timing induced jitter, and other digital artifacts that we will collectively call digital noise.  Very sophisticated error correction circuitry is then tasked to recreate the original data encoded in the disc from the now corrupted data.

An application of Essence of Music Treatment reduces this digital noise.   A measurable increase in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) results.  Essence of Music Treatment also measurably reduces bit read errors (lowers the BER) allowing a more precise retrieval of the disc's uncorrupted encoded digital data, presumably requiring less intervention by the error correction circuitry.  The improved SNR coupled with a significant reduction in the BER, increases the efficiency of the circuit.  Audio-Video enthusiasts are rewarded with a revelation of previously unintelligible information originally captured by microphones and video cameras during audio/video recording sessions; information now available to the enthusiast that was always present within the disc's encoded data layer, but was simply obscured by the digital noise.  You will immediately see and hear more realistic portrayals of the original performances.

What benefits accrue in using Essence of Music prior to ripping discs to a media server?

Ripping following Essence of Music application uncovers and then permanently captures additional detail, spatial cues, and ambient information to your hard drive - information that was always present but latent in your disc prior to Essence of Music application.

Have the effects of Essence of Music been measured?

In an independent test, Jim Aud of Purist Audio Design utilized a certified Phillips Professional CD reader with two identical discs.  One disc remained untreated (control); the other disc was treated with Essence of Music.  A 33% reduction in bit read errors (BER) was documented.

In subsequent testing by Purist Audio Design, single blind listening tests were conducted using the company's reference audio test system. Two identical copies of 8 different CDs were played randomly.  Participants selected the Essence of Music treated disc every time.

Bottom Line

Essence of Music Treatment addresses the deleterious effects of birefringence at the consumer's earliest point of intervention - the manufactured disc.  Essence of Music lowers digital audio-video noise by reducing the BER to increase the SNR.  A more accurate data read and delivery of the encoded data to your player results.  Ripping will capture the previously obscured information to your media server. The audio & video improvements described have been verified by industry professionals and customers in unstructured and in blind A-B testing, and is supported by scientific BER measurements.

Industry Reports

"The treated disc consistently gave me increased resolution, an increased sense of presence and an increased fullness to the sound of instruments...the soundstage...deeper and more precise... I could clearly hear with every CD an improvement with the Essence of Music treatment."  Jack Roberts - Dagogo, November 24, 2014...

"I must admit that since the initial rip was (bit) perfect, I cannot understand how the new rip could be any better, but it is..." Norm Luttbeg  -  Stereo Times,  The Complete Audiophile Magazine,  Apr 20, 2014...

"...a huge impact in terms of effectiveness.  Listening to the untreated copy of Anime Salve, BMG Ricordi, 1996 by Fabrizio De Andrè was satisfying, it is a well recorded masterpiece. So I thought. The Essence of Music treated copy literally annihilated the first. ...the former was dull and lifeless (when) compared to post-treatment." Giuseppe Trotto   -  ReMusic.it, November 14, 2014...

"The effects of applying the Essence of Music to the playing surface of 6 CD's... include increased resolution, increased dynamic range, greater depth, an increase in fullness in the sound of instruments, and changes in instrument texture..."   Roy Harris  - Audiophilia, August 28, 2014...
