Cary CD 306 SACD Player - Screaming Deal!!!
8/10 Condition with Perfect Face | Original Box & Manual | New Transport & Laser
Reviews
This is a fantastic sounding SACD player. The CD-306 SACD plays SACD's, HDCD's, Redbook CD's, CD-R's & RW"s. It can upsample CD playback to 24/768, and it can also upsample anything on the (coaxial, Toslink, AES/EBU) digital inputs to 24/192.
This CD player from Cary Audio lies between the CD 306 and CD 306 pro. It retailed for $6000 new. I have priced this unit fairly using the Audiogon bluebook pricing for both. Even at trade in value (what a dealer would offer in trade for this unit from a customer) this unit is STILL priced aggressively.
Robert Harley says of the SACD 306:
"It was hard to put my finger on exactly why I found the CD 306 so musical, but about its fundamental musicality there was no doubt. It’s easier to describe what the Cary CD 306 isn’t: dry, thin, hard, cold. Find your own antonyms to those descriptors and that’s what the CD 306 is. In addition, the 306 is the Swiss army knife of CD players: It upsamples for output on its analog audio jacks and upsamples for conversion by an outboard processor, acts as a digital-to-analog converter for other digital sources, and decodes HDCD discs. "

Dave Clark of Positive Feedback Online says:
"The Cary 306 SACD, with any disc we have tossed its way, has revealed more instrumental texture and realnessness than previously heard from any other digital source here in my home. Instruments and vocalists take on a greater sense of thereness with a dimensionality and spatial-awareness that allows one to get that much closer to the recording event. Images are presented with much more air and presence—make that individuality - yet they do not stand alone in the sense that they are separate from the rest of the musical tapestry. No, they all play together as a musical cloth—the Cary just allows each thread to stand out with a greater sense of delineation and purpose. That is, you have a greater sense of each instrument's texture allowing you to feel or sense the notes or music as never before—tonally, harmonically, spatially the music sounds so captivatingly right.
All without a hint of stridency, glare, grit, or other digital nasties, of which, are easily misinterpreted as detail and resolution. Harmonically and tonally, the Cary is quite balanced coming across as being very neutral without any sense of that nomenclature's stigma of being thin, lean, analytical, bleached, etc. The Cary simply gets the music across to you in a well-balanced, grab you by the throat, viscerally captivating way. Nothing stands out as being either too much or not enough."
Below is the invoice from Cary Audio showing that the laser and transport mechanism were replaced as of 2/19/2015. I have the original paper copy of this invoice and will send it along with the manual, etc.
